I go solo to the golf course more times than not. I generally get paired up with another single or group.
I have been very fortunate to have played with some very nice and interesting people.

So far the most interesting twosome I played with was super cross racer from Ecuador and his former mechanic from New Zealand. Both really nice guys and very dedicated to their round.

Last week I played with a former electrical contractor turned studio musician.

I really love the game of golf, (just wish it showed me some love back), meeting new people is the icing on the cake.

I once played with hockey player Sandy McCarthy who was on the Rangers at the time. He hit the ball a mile without much effort (he's 6'3, 225) and was very friendly as well.

No doubt there are some characters out there... but I'd say 95% or better of the people I've been paired up with (and that's quite a sample size) have been REALLY good people. The most interesting so far was actually someone I got to caddy for, rather than got paired up with.

I worked at a country club in Morris County, New Jersey and during the annual Member-Guest tournament... one of the members brough Neil Smith, the General Manager of the Rangers, with him. Luckily for me... I was assigned to caddy for them. It was a great time and I got to learn a LOT about the team during the two days. In the end... he and his partner came in 3rd place and really took care of me for my work.

As for playing partners... really nobody sticks out. Most guys are just like me... out to play a round of golf. Only one I remember for sure was a guy who owns a cheesecake processing company. I remember just because it was my favorite dessert and he offered to send me a few... but I never heard from him after the round. Damnit!

Not really a playing partner. But, a pleasant exchange with one of the players at the U.S. Senior Open in 2004 at Bellerive.

It had been a rainy week, and the players had two rounds on Sunday. I walked the first round with a group about nine shots out of the lead. I was interested in someone I had seen earlier on the driving range, and he had a swing similar to what I tried to do. Can't remember the guy's name, but it was a club pro from Texas.

Anyway, about the fifth hole, he asks me if I get to play golf much. This starts up some two and three minute conversations between holes about all matters of golf.

I told him I hoped I wasn't hurting his concentration. He said, not al all - when a club pro makes the cut in the open, the last two days are all gravy.

Focus, connect and follow through!

82yo that regularly shoots close to his age. Hits it about 200yds (with roll) straight down the middle every time with the driver. Deadly accurate from 150 yards and 100 yards from the green. Always smiling and drinking his arthritis elixir. Great stories and full of wisdom. He plays just about every day March to November.

Put me in the category of "gets paired up with mostly great partners". I play alone or in a twosome often and around here, unless it's an off-hour or poor weather you're certain to get paired with others to fill up a foursome. It's generally not an option.

Recently one of my partners was the drummer who played on the original version of "I fought the law". Really cool guy. Couldn't hit it the furthest but had a deadly short game.

I also was paired up with a very old, quiet fellow named Akira who ended up sharing all sorts of sage wisdom with me, but in a good way, not the obnoxious way. Went to the same course a week later and got paired up with him again. THis time, he gave me some awesome origami animals to take home to my kids.

If that isn't bourbon, I'm a monkey.

I love feisty old guys and hope I live to be one.

About 18 years ago I was making the turn at a muni right near downtown Seattle, Jefferson Park, and there was a very large man at ten tee. We drive up and he asks if we want to join him. Turns out it was Olden Polynice otherwise know as "Officer Polynice". He was then playing for the Sonic's. He was about 7' 1" and wearing knickers and a silly hat. Turns out Redbird had just given him a brand new set of clubs and he was trying them out. He let us try his extra long driver, I swear it was longer than I was tall. He was terrible at golf and spent the whole time telling us how he had "dominated" Hakeem Olojuwon in the summer league.
Also played behind Alex Rodriguez many years ago while he was in the minors playing for Tacoma. He could kill the ball but it never went straight. He had a nice looking young lady riding along with him. He played about 5 holes and bailed.

Blue collar southern golfers. I played with this portly fellow from arkansas a few years ago that looked like he just got done fishing or something. Old beat up nascar hat and everything..lol. He carried this set of old persimmon era woods and irons and he just nuked the ball with them. He was out there with me and all my modern equipment. I think he shot 79 or 80. It seemed like he had a nickname or catchphrase for every shot he hit. Very interesting character. I find that many of the blue collar southern golfers ive played with have similar personalities. They're a hoot to play with.

Played years ago with the former President of Aston Martin Motor Cars. He was the part of the team that designed the James Bond Cars for the movies. Had some great stories. Drove a golf cart like he was in a high speed rally! Nice guy though.

    • I'll try to post a bit more here as the season moves on.  Yesterday was my first "referee gig" this year, the first of a two-day event for juniors.  No real unusual rulings, but a couple of slightly complicated situations with two consecutive drops.  There's a hole with a Red Penalty Area down the right, with a cart path running parallel.  On a couple of occasions a player had to take Penalty Area relief.  Two clublengths from the point of entry required dropping no further left than the center of the cart path.   Once that relief procedure was completed, he took relief from the cart path.  Due to the relatively small distance between the path and the PA, the Nearest Point of Complete Relief was to the "fairway side" of the path.  I made the Player consider a drop to the PA side, with the player's feet clear of the path (i.e. complete relief from interference), but that would have put the drop in the Penalty Area, which isn't acceptable. Something which I now see as common, this 36-hole event is defined as four 9-hole stipulated rounds.  This is done so that, if bad weather sets in, there can be legitimate results if everyone has completed at least 9 holes.
