Im looking at getting a 5 wood..
would this club be ok to fill the gap between driver and 4 hybrid??or will it not go much further than 4 hybrid..if both clubs were hit perfectly...would the distance in a 5 wood be further..

obviously i will try before i buy..

the 5 wood is 18 degree taylormade ti r9

the hybrid is #4 22 degree taylormade 09 rescue not sure on shaft length

I've never used a 4h, but experience tells me it's more like a 3-iron distancewise. Yeah, a typical 5-wood would be perfect good - or maybe go retro and get a 4-wood?

I have a TM R7 5w and Adams 22 deg 4H and hit them the same distance ~180 yds.

It should fill the gap well. My personal experience is that a 23* 4h is a 200-210yd club, my 18.5* 5wd is a 230-235yd club. Less loft, longer shaft, the 5wd should be considerably longer.

Ditto - a solid 5-wood is 20-25 yards longer than my 3-iron.

+1 . until i dropped the hybrid. the 4 iron worked aalmost as well.

i would honestly recommend a 4 wood. i got one last year and i love it more than any club in my bad. they come at 16 to 17 degrees and you can hit them like a 3 wood with the height and ease of a 5 wood. it would be the perfect in between because 4 hybrids usually run about 22-24 degrees if i remember right and a 17* 4 wood would create a good degree gap giving you a beneficial yardage gap and also leaving you with an easy to hit fairway wood. and in general they just go farther than a 5 wood, but there so easy to hit.
the 5 wood and 4 hybrid are too close together. 5 woods run about a 19* loft and 4h about 22-24 so in my opinion the two clubs wouldn't have a big enough yardage gap to make it worth the extra $200. i would advise you to look into a 4 wood option because they are making a comeback and i know i am no the only one who has had success with them.

I have both a 5 wood and 4 hybrid, shoot in the mid 90s. 4h averages around 180-185 yards very consistant compared to the 5 wood which I tend to hit anywhere from 200-230. Hope this helps

As sean_miller and cody west suggested, consider a 4 wood if it's your only FW. Most people find it easier to hit than a 3W.

I might have gone that route if I was to start over. With me it was the chicken v. egg thing.

1.) pick up 2009 3-wood with makes your 1999 era driver obsolete. 2.) buy Fybrid (and a 5-wood off ebay) to attemt to fill new gap between old 3-iron and new 3-wood (essentially to replace the 2-iron) 3.) Decide whether to purchase a 2009 driver or not to use a driver at all - wtf? that's crazy. 4.) Purchase G10 If I'd bought a 4-wood at first - instead of a 3-wood - I'd probably still be using my old Callaway driver because I still hit it well.

how do you go from telling him to buy a driver which is not what he is looking for to telling him to buy a g10. he wasnt asking for a driver like a 4 wood will fill the gap and it will be easy to hit. and why do you way wft to not using a driver, i do it all the time actually. iv played some of my best rounds when i leave the driver in the bag room. with my 4 wood i can tee off with it and never miss the fairway and hit it off the deck and hit greens.

its a great club and you should at least demo one or 2 before you sign off on the idea because even with the new r9 4 wood i still bought a ft-9 tour last year after i bought the 4 wood. it wasnt a question of having a club to use off the tee because i still hit my old driver well, it was time to replace it because it was old and i knew it would improve my game and even with my old driver it went a good distance farther than the 4 wood

My list was the backward assed way I ended up with a new driver - if I'd bought a 5-wood (or a 4-wood like people seem to be obsessed with this season) instead of a 3-wood, I would have never needed a new driver. Would have saved myself some money and probably be shooting the same scores anyway since I only hit the driver about 5 times a round anyway. I'm really not sure what you're talking about. No seriously, I have no idea.

I don't think sean was telling the OP what to do, he was only relating his experience. I'd suggest the 4W too. If you want a good distance gap, the 4W would be ideal. I like my 4W (when I put a good hit on it, but that's true for any club, im a 32 cap).

I went for the 5 wood in the end,they didnt even have 4 wood in stock,thanks for all the replys and advice...

5 wood replaces 2 iron(not that i have a 2 iron lol)

I love my 5W, and it's the last holdover from my decade-old starter set. It has such a nice, high flight... the second hole on a course near here is a 270 yard par 4 down a steep incline. The trick is that it's got a 80-100 foot monster of a tree squarely between the tee box and the green, reaching 30-50 feet above the tee box height. Usually I shank on this one, but finally the other day I hit the 5W cleanly and watched it sail over the top of the tree and found it about 60 yards short of the green. It was such a pretty shot, and nice after seeing it in my head so many times to finally put it on the course.

So enjoy your 5W. May it bring you many shots like this one!

p.s., I pitched on, then three-putted for bogey. Still left me with a good feeling, though.

im saying that just because he buys a 4 wood doesnt mean he wont buy a new driver because the 4 wood definantly doesn't make the driver obsolete. i still bought and hit my brand new driver a good amount but i can see where your coming from because some of my best rounds are when i just hit my 4 wood instead of the driver. the second part was directed towards the thread starter saying that he should demo at least one or two 4 woods and 5 woods before making a final decision because golf is a personal sport and whats right for me might not be right for you.
