Chipping and putting is the obvious answer, but I will take a W-8 from the fairway. With any of those clubs I have the expectation that I will hit those clubs close. If I do, I know I will score and have a good day.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

When im hitting crisp pitch shots (anywhere from 20-70 yards) that are landing where i aim, then i usually have a good round. Nothing in the game (besides draining a long putt) makes me feel more satisfied than sticking a pitch to tap in range from 50 yards.

I'd say two things. First is putting. If I make putts then that can be a real momentum builder for the next tee shot and round. Next is driving. If I'm wild it is hard to not play bad. I've been wild recently but been making putts so my scores having been bad the past couple of times. It also makes chipping easier since I EXPECT to make from 5 feet now. I just had a recent huge jump in my putting ability for no apparent reason but I've never putted like i've been. I can't help but talk about it, I am totally pumped about getting better at something in golf. It has been two years since I actually seen any improvement until this with putting.

Right now for me, it's lag putting. I will go through spells on longer putts (25ft+) where my lag putting goes nuts and I'll leave myself a bunch of 6+ft second putts, that's a score killer.

Otherwise, got to be <20yd chips, I need to start getting these close and try to get at least to 40% up/downs in a round.

second shot.
I'm really accurate off the tee, but it's my irons that are killing me. I'm not missing by much but it pisses me off to bomb a drive and then pull a 7i left of the green.

Getting up and down, usually for par but on occasion, just getting up and down for bogey is acceptable. Walking away with a par after a missed approach shot, to me, feels just as good as birdie. And if you want to crush your opponents will, scrambling for a pars is tough to beat.

The short game is the most practiceable. (not sure if that's a word). I play a game where I play 30 chip shots one at a time and putt them out. If I get up and down 50% or better, I'm done. If not, I continue until I do. You wanna feel pressure? Stand over a five footer to get to 50% with your tummy growling, wife calling, beer low-level light flashing, and wanna go home tired.

Whoever came up with the saying, "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work", is a moron.

I haven't been able to hit anything above a 7 iron for a few weeks (excluding woods/driver) now so the most important scoring shots have been chips/pitches inside of 50 yards. That covers all my missed greens and my third shot on par-5's, and when those are finishin inside 10 ft. my score will be low.

I don't know that I've ever been playing at a level where I was hitting more greens than I was missing consistently, but I used to feel as though my second shot was the shot that was going to dictate my score. The second shot recovers bad drives and ruins great ones, and if you want to make birdies throwin darts on approach is the easiest way to do it.

I don't make that many birdies so for up/down for par is the name of the game.

For me, it's always my approach shot. If I can land it close to the hole, I know I'm making a 1 putt, but if it's 12 yards or more, I know it's going to be a two putt (hopefully not a three putt). The last couple of rounds I played, my bump and run shots were my scoring shots as I would get them to within a couple of feet of the hole for an easy tap-in.

holing putts inside 10 feet, main difference between a very good score and an average one..

This. Since I rarely land my approach shot inside 10 feet at this point in my game, it's imperative for me to make these putts. I rarely, rarely have a birdie putt inside of 10 feet.

I am sure it will be different for different index levels, etc., but here's mine:

Me too. I love my little flop shot with my 60*. If I can flop it up there for a little 2 ft or less 1 putt, that's where I score.

I am not great at hitting GIR, as my approach shots are often close to the green, but not on. So.... one-putts for me are key to a good score.

I'd liek to change my answer. For me, it's the first shot that I'm trying to hole. That might be a shot from the fairway, the sand, or even the green if it was a long approach. If I have an honest chance at holing it, I try. If it's foolish but I try anyway, it could get ugly.
