Currently, I have iPhone 3G, but have been waiting for iPhone 4G for sometime...

June 14 is when I can place the order. I will sign up as that morning....

I have a 3G as well, definitely going to upgrade, it looks really good.

I like the new HD video camera as well, it should work great for shooting swing and putting video, I hope that swing app works with it.

yup... just iPhone 4... which leaves the gates wide open for the iPhone 4G once AT&T; gets a 4G network (meanwhile the rest of the developed world already has 4G network capabilities)

don't know what phone you use now, but should be able to get a pretty good deal on a used 3GS

The U.S. is way, way behind on the technology. My father spent the last 7 or 8 years of his career designing smart phones. The stuff you're seeing now is what they were working on years ago. There's rivals made by other companies that far surpass it, but they never release them. I've used phones made 5 years ago that surpass this thing. The thing is, no other company wanted to release a phone with similar features with such a slow and antiquated network (edge was the only network the original iPhone used), so they didn't. It was a bad move. Motorola wrote its own death warrant by not releasing some of the phones it spent millions designing.

I sat today and watched my father yell at the TV when they were doing the release thing. "All that money for a hunk of crap! I designed these features into a phone 8 years ago! This thing can't even do... (insert this or that here). It's funny. I would never own one though. My phone is several years old, but it's a hand made prototype (as are all my phones), and it will be with me for a while.

yeh this has me confused also..ATT advertises 3G, some say they really do have 4G others say they don't and they are holding off till the 4G phone comes out later this month. Any phone geeks out there?

I thought both Verizon and AT&T; were suppose to be moving to 4G as 3G is "old" technology. Of course, I have no idea as to when that will happen. The only reason I am with AT&T; is because of iPhone. I use to have Verizon, which I think had the best coverage by far. I have had T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.; Of all these, Verizon has the best coverage.... I just wish Verizon and Apple would kiss and make-up and get iPhone on Verizon...

I can simply not believe that. Sorry.

I do believe that this technology may have been in the works for several years, in fact, Steve Jobs etc state it has been. But as a fully functional product as fast as the iPhone 4, milestone etc are.....no way. The idea and development of the processors ( like the ARM ), current memory chips, antenna capabilities, , LED screens etc were just starting....let alone the motion control ( in that form factor ).

I have travelled extensively in Asia (particularily Korea and Japan) and they had phones there at the time that we didn't see here for 2 or 3 years later. They also have internet speeds that are faster than anything offered by ISP's over here and it doesn't cost a fraction of what it does over here either.

Yep. I had many of these phones years before they were available here, or even there. I carried a Vodaphone prototype for quite some time, it was equipped for networks that wouldn't be available in the U.S. for several years. The iPhone is basically taking what's available overseas, and repacking it to fit the lesser American infrastructure.

Sure it is. Not. If that were the case it wouldn't sell like gangbusters in countries like Japan. They'd say "oh, that's five year old crap" and not buy it.

Correct. The fact is, iPhone is selling well there due to the definition of "smartphone." This article just barely touches on the subject:

While most Japanese phones aren't technically considered smartphones because of their hardware design and software platform, they're still much more advanced than what we consider "dumb" phones in the States. Many phones that aren't considered smartphones are still used to run apps and watch video, even live TV. And Japan is much more advanced than the U.S. in fields like mobile payments.

I have in my posession some prototypes made by NTT Docomo several years ago, but I need to get conformation on exaclty what I can and can't say about them, as I tested them, and had to promise non disclosure.

one of the main reasons the iPhone is so popular in countries like Korea and Japan, is becuase it's so popular in america... these cultures mindset is entrenched in becoming equal with the west, and having what the west has... therefore if it is popular in America, it must be good, and regardless of how "good" it actually is, many people in those countries will purchase one.

Because the area where the area where the US is so far behind in networks. Cell networks, broadband internet networks, etc... We have by far and away the highest total internet usage, and what we don't have is extra bandwidth.

grasshopper is correct...the USA is 3.8 M sq miles, Japan is 150,000 sq mi (about 2X the size of Florida) with a very concentrated population center. Technology or some conspiracy isn't the problem, building the infrastucture to economically service such a huge geographic territory is expensive. Same as cars, ethanol, LPG, electric...the problem is not technology it's distribution. You can't make money selling electric cars if there is no re charging stations and no one has the money to put 100,000 distribution points.

Cel towers are expensive and require unbelievable local approvals and hoop jumping to get built. Now that most are built... the ability to move btw 3G to 4G should be easier but that was my original question. Is ATT 4G now or not? I understand that 4G is faster but I do not understand the cost or difficulty of upgrading.
