yeah thats something to get use to, wearing glasses while playing golf. Its a bit tough when if your head moves such that now the golfball is outside the lense area.

Never had a problem playing golf with glasses. OK, when beginning I wore the bottle bottom Bill G. variety, then when I silenced my head a bit I moved to... Nope, everything fine with chin down and specs here.

I used to be a chin down guy, then i read somewhere that keeping your chin down can interfere with your shoulder turn and cause you to dip your shoulder down in order to turn 90*. ever since I conciously started putting my chin up, I have been striking the ball alot better. I think i read it in Tiger Wood's book.

You didn't read the earlier posts, did you?

Your chin need not be up. Your swing may have improved but it probably wasn't because of your chin, unless you had it buried in your chest before.

I keep my chin up. I dont bend my head backwards or anything, i just keep the natural neck poistion i get from bending from the hips. Ive never seen my swing on video, but im pretty sure my head turns slighty with my shoulders anyway. I just dont like feeling my shoulders running into my chin back or through. Besides, everyones body is different. Some have different proportions than others.

I read them, just being honest. And you're right, I don't have enough knowledge of swing mechanics to know if it really did help me or not, but mentally i "feel" like it's helping me not bottom out prior to hitting the ball and get better contact.

I suspect that chin position is like grip and posture - whatever works for you is standard.

I suspect that purposely keeping your chin up could actually harm your neck. I suspect this advice is intended to keep people from slumping excessively? But you still can have good or lousy posture chin up or chin down.

I would also think it goes along with the shoulder idea, actively holding your head up puts more tension in the body, so muscles don't fire as quickly.

Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.

FWIW, the answer is "down" because:

Of course I picked down. I tried up for about 3 swings once, but ruled it out almost immediately because the fact that I couldn't lock my eyes well on the ball meant I had more of a tendency to lose posture not less as people say. The eyes eyes are key to maintaining spine angle and it's extremely important what's going on with them throughout any motion in golf.

  • 2 weeks later...

Could not vote because my answer was not among the choices. I keep my chin out, not up or down. keeping it up implies difficulty seeing the ball/ keeping it down interferes with shoulders turning. Out is a natural consequence of good posture, ie. straight spine, not slumped or too upright.

Those who know me will know how I voted.

Out is the same as up, because I doubt very much that you're looking at the ball out of the center of your eyes.

Additionally, your spine is NOT straight - it's an s-curve - so attempts to keep it straight imply rigidity and your muscles and bones doing things they were not intended to do. I prefer and teach a softer, rounded spine and a chin that's in a position that lets you look at the ball out of the center of your eyes.
