My driver is all but sold on ebay. I haven't been able to find anything i want to replace it with yet.

Then i did the count. 28 drivers in 7 years of golf. That's just not a healthy relationship. So adjustablesuperfastmachspeedburnerdiablos can stay where they are. I will no longer be a slave to deluding myself & my hefty handicap that i can crush your 46 inch boomsticks with the shiny bells & whistles down every fairway.

I will stick with my ugly ti 3wd, 3h & 5i. I will practice my shortgame until i can putt like phil. Well maybe like sergio.

Currently i don't have an official handicap. I haven't entered any scores into the rcga in 2 years. I'm about a 20 right now. Bogey golfer, occasional bird, occasional 9. Usually around 90-95 for par72 course.

I will aquire a driver when i can call myself a mid capper legitimately. Say 12 handicap. & i will be fit for said driver.

So, with 3 young kids & one more on the way, around 2016. Sweet!!!

28 drivers in 7 years? If you spent half that money on lessons, you could probably have used the driver you got the first time.

I knew a pro who didn't use a driver until he was a 8 handicap.

good luck, If I didn't have my driver I'd be around a 18 handicap.

Ive went through about 5 in the last 2 years, i broke the one i liked the most, my nitro ld 20 driver i bought at kmart and just ordered another one online earlier this morning from kmart. Granted the price of all the drivers i have tried might barely add up to more than $100 so ive gone the cheap route. I had gotten to where i could hit that nitro pretty good and for $35 including shipping i figured it was worth the risk to see if this one will last longer. Ive tried a lot of them out, some many times more expensive than the nitro but its the one i like the best and one of the cheapest too, going with what i know works, hoping the shaft breaking in the other one was a fluke and not the norm.

When I took up the game I was told by my dad to not use a driver, use a 3 wood until I could hit that consitently then get a driver.
This worked very well for me and I coudl hit my 3 wood as far as the drives of the guys I played with (all the same level) but I found more fairways than they ever did

I still use my 3 wood off the tee on 3 par 4's on my course.

POTD. Learn to swing an 8 iron, then you'll be able to hit a driver. It's not all that hard

4 drivers in ten years... you must be picking the wrong ones ;)

In all honesty, if you've got the money around to club-ho, you may be surprised how good of a value a $60 lesson is.

Try the lessons route. Find out who gives lessons in your area - do a google search for their credentials - with 3 or 4 lessons (including video) you'll never look back. I suspect you've never had a driver fitting either.

Having said that, even on a wide open course I might use a driver about 6 times a round. I could get around okay without one and like most amateurs, would shoot about the same score. Every missed chance at eagle would be one less OB or water ball.

Back about 1987, I broke the metal shaft on my driver. The pro shop sent it out of town for repair, and in a mixup it didn't come back for 2 months.

I used a 3-wood off the tee, and played to about a 15 hdcp. that season. (Most of the courses were medium length at best). Did quite well with fairways hit, but was inconsistent on irons.

Recently I have played with different middle handicappers who used a strong 12* or 13* 3W off the tee. One guy had a hot draw that he controlled really well. The recent HL drivers probably react similar to the strong 3W.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Interesting comments in this thread. Last year, I was exclusively using a 5-wood or 3-iron off the tee.

I went in search of a 3-wood and was advised by a PGA qualified instructor that most people use Drivers rather than 3-woods on the grounds that they are more forgiving.

You should have asked that PGA qualified instructor where he gets his information from. He gave you some bad info.

Hardly surprising, as it was the same guy who "instructed" me to keep my shoulders back at address because I was "too rounded."

To be fair, he did sort out a huge swing-plane problem... but some of the other advice seemed mis-leading to me.

POTD.

You can't be serious. Learn to swing an 8 iron and you will be able to hit a Driver?

OP, don't worry about it, lots of people have trouble hitting driver consistantly. And unless you are a very short hitter or play particularly long courses, your scores will improve from the increased control and confidence you have in your 3 wood.

I agree with most on the thread. I have more confidence off the tee with my 3w then my driver. I rarley use the driver at this point. I have been practicing at the range, but been keeping it in the bag on the course.
