I play Mizuno's now and I will never buy another set of clubs that are not blades. That is just not going to happen.

Using blades makes you improve your game and if you are a 10 handicap and want to be better, then you need to at least try them or some form of them.

I saw someone else say trying oversized. Don't! That is my opinion, but I used them for years and now that I am back to blades I appreciate them even more.

I think one of the biggest things is just what you hit best and what fits your eye. The game is all about scoring anyway, right? I have been playing Mizuno blades for years not because I was a single digit handicap or could work the ball, etc....I have used them because they have such a small head. I can't stand to look down at a big oversized clubhead on my irons. There is just no way I would ever buy them but it is a personal preference. If you find a set of forgiving clubs that feel good to you and you play well with, buy them. On the other hand, if you find a "player's set" that you like, don't be afraid to buy those either. You will learn to hit them just as well and it will probably make you tighten up your game much quicker....just remember that if you hit it bad, the blades will let you know "how bad" as compared to the more forgiving clubs and many times this is what discourages players instead of encouraging them to fix the problem.

If you practice..... Blades don't magically make you better. Practice makes you better. It doesn't matter if it is blades or sgi. The only way you will get better is to practice practice practice!

I would recommend the x-forged, because they are forged and still have somewhat of a cavity back. You can still shape easily and still have help when needed. I play the x-forged, and i am a Callaway guy as you can tell, but i've tried other irons and nothing else has the right balance of shapability to playability.

Not sure why a PING guy would get stoked about forged, but if X-proto is a nice stick.

I do know that.

I can see some guys who really want forged irons, but are set on the PING brand, overpaying by at least $500 for a set of PING forged irons, but going to Callaway irons? Not so much.

The AP2's are great clubs, but the R9 TP's are very similar with a wider head. I was torn between the two until I noticed how much more hitting space there was on the TP's. I just ordered them today and I am selling my Ping G10's (which I got when i was a 30 index ((1 year ago). Now that I am an 8.5, I need a Cav-Back blade and I am going to get all the distance of a a blade with the forgiveness of a Ping in the R9 TP's. To be honest, unless your a Titleist pro, I don't see why anyone would choose the AP2's. It's a forged club with a plastic insert (?), and is so small that if you don't hit it perfectly its not going to be anywhere near the green. The only other clubs I could suggest besides the TP's are maybe some Mizuno's. But the technology in the TP's is so superior to that of the Mizuno's. Also the TP's are technically not "forged", so all the more forgiveness. It's all up to you man, but at 8-10 handicaps, we can't sacrifice all forgiveness.

I tried a ton of irons last year and decided to go with the Callaway x-22 tour. Love everything about this club. If you gave me the choice to switch to any other iron, I don't think you could convince me to give them up. Before hitting any iron, I need to be comfortable with the setup. For me, the x-18, 20, 22 (non tour), Diablo, as well as about 50% of all irons are to thick looking on setup. I didn't care for the offset of the Ping G15s. One club that has caught my eye is the new Adams CB2. They look sweet. Good luck.

I purchased the i15's last fall and am glad I did. They and a lesson got my handicap back into single digits this year.

In reality, good clubs are good clubs, buy one that you like to look at and learn to hit them.

I was a Ping Eye 2 guy 25 years ago and I believe that if you like the looks and playabillity of Ping irons, you are sold for life. I had a layoff of about 15 years, to busy making money, kids, family, etc. and restarted playing golf at the end last summer, surfed the internet and bought a Wilson Staff Ci-7 set (so many good reviews) with graphite shafts. These were a bit oversized and very easy to hit straight balls with. Wanting to hit a fade (more bite) on long shots to the green .... the Ci-7 proved to be difficult to control.

So I traded them in for a set of TaylorMade Tour Preferred irons (steel shaft), a great set, lots of control, forgiving more than expected, but lacking feedback. So I thought maybe I needed a forged iron to get a better feedback, treid the new Wilson Staff FG Tour ..... but I didn't like it (difficult to explain, it just didn't feel OK) and got a set of heavely used Titleist ZB irons which I had reshafted with R/S shafts ..... this set felt great for about a month, went to the range about daily hitting 300 balls per day at least .... hoping to get back at my former single handicap level. The ZB is a great set, lots of control in the short and middle irons, some forgiviness in the longer irons.

Being a Ping guy ..... I went to a Ping demo day, because I wanted to try the S57 irons.

I ended up with buying a fitted set of the i15 and it felt like coming home.

I now play the i15 for about 3 months and my handicap is on the way to single again, last few rounds below 80 (at our 6880 yds 72.9/132 course).

This post reminds me of the steaming piles I had to shovel out of the barn when I was a kid. If only I had a TaylorMade shovel I could have gone pro.

    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
