I started using the 4" drill from The Impact Zone this past weekend and it really translated well when I took it to the course on Sunday. My ball striking was was much improved with my irons. I ordered the book and expect to have it later in the week.

Couple of questions:

- Do you use the same 4" focus point for all irons? Say 5i through wedge? I assume so since some of the drills I've read talk about using a PW. I'm curious if you move the focus depend on what iron you're using.
- How is this for hybrids? I have much more of a sweeping swing and it didn't seem to translate as well. Could just be because it was new.
- Anyone use this for driver as well?

Side, what I really like about this drill is the psychological piece. My swing looks very different when I video myself with a ball and then without a ball. A lot of bad habits sneak in when you put a ball in front of my eyes. This drill seems to take that out and let the natural swing do the work.

I read the book, but I am no experts instructor.  From my understanding, the impact zone for the irons is a descending strike meaining the club impacts the ball before the bottom or low point of the swing arc.  So what you are focusing on 4"  in front of the ball is supposed to be that bottom or low point.

Therefore with a sweeping swing on the hybrid, you don't want contact to be as much prior to the low point.  You still want to hit the ball before the bottom consistently though, or else you lose directional control and consistency.  I speculate that the "shape" of the hybrid sole helps prevent the golfer from digging into the turf since you are trying to "time" the arc bottom with the ball.

I hope this helps, I could probably draw it easier than I can explain it.

I use it for everything except wedges and driver.  When I practice, I focus on getting my weight to shift so that my focal point is the low point.  On the course, it is just the focal point and no other swing thought.

It really helps when you are struggling and lots of negative thoughts pop into your head.  Clear your mind and focus on the point.

If you are at a range with mats, place a small piece of masking tape 2-3" in front of the ball.  Focus on the tape and swing.  You are trying to move the tape and swinging through the ball to get it. With grass ranges, put a broken tee down 2-3 inches in front of the ball, pushed down level with the turf, and do the same thing.  The point Clampett is making is the ball is not the focus, the low point is.

That's a great idea. All my ranges are mat ranges. In the summer they'll usually let you hit off the grass if you go to the far end but in the winter (dome) there are no options but to hit off of mats. I'll be bringing a roll of painter's tape next time I go. Thanks a ton for the idea.

I have a cut down rubber tee that extends maybe 1/4" above the surface of the mat.  I place the tee so that it's about 3" - 4" in front of where I place my ball.  On good swings I can hear the club strike the top of the tee after contacting the ball.

Yeah, I've done that too. I like the tape even better because its visual and you can be positive you hit it because you'll tear it, scuff it or move it. Next time out I plan on laying down a strip off tape left to right about 3" ahead of my ball position and I'll just work my way down the line, kinda like the drill in the SnT book or the sand drill in Clampett's book.

Went to the range the other day with my roll of masking tape with the intention of laying down a line 4" in front of the ball and trying to hit the tape on every swing. Unfortunately the tape didn't stick very well as the mats had fairly dense bristlely (sp?) surface and just didn't work out the way I had hoped.

Went home and thought about other options and I think I've come up with my new favorite home made training aid: Cheerios! Super cheap and plentiful! Place a cheerio 4" in front of the ball and try to explode the cheerio on every swing. Bio-degradeable and squirrels love them! Next time out to the range I'll bring a ziplock of cheerios and see how it works out.

I'll report back for anyone who is interested but I think this will work great!

Why don't you use it with wedges? I can understand with the driver, even though Clampett insists that you need to hit down with the driver I'm not sure I agree 100% with that. Then again, I am a hack so who am I to question! LOL.

As far as Clampett's theory with the driver...I don't disagree  IF the player has a lower handicap and has a tendency to hit the ball high (usually by flipping). The thought of hitting down can reduce the flip. BUT if you say "hit down" to a higher handicapper, they will come over the top and actually take turf!  not good.

To clarify, for full wedge shots I focus in front of the ball.  For pitching and chipping, I focus on the ball.

Ernest, Cheerios are a great idea!  The tape works better in indoor mats.  Also, I just use a small piece of tape, about 1/2", not a whole strip.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
