I have a 2 year old Nike sumo driver and something's up with it. The last 2 rounds I played it felt like I mishit shots, but not sure why. Well, when I went to the range yesterday, I noticed the same thing. It's not making the same sound off the clubface anymore and feels softer almost. When I was playing Monday, I felt like I was hitting the ball less than usual, but I didn't have a great shot shape that day, so I don't know if I lost distance. I felt like it was a loss of distance at the range, but since the balls are different, it's not an accurate gauge like on the course

I looked for dents or cracks on the clubface, but couldn't spot any. Can a face go dead that quick? I don't beat the club off the ground or anything. My average drives are around 270 and I hit a few 300 yd. drives a round. That's only this year though. I was hitting less than that the last 2 years, but always close to 250.

It's possible definitely that the face is dead, but it's also possible that you are just hitting the ball off the toe or the heel.

That's the first thing I thought. But, even my dead straight perfect trajectory shots felt (and sounded) weird. I really hope it's not dead, I don't want to buy a new driver. I'm gonna go back to the range today and try to determine what's going on.

I have had two drivers fail with cracks in the face over the last few years. Before the crack became visible (or detectable with the finger) the driver became erratic in both distance and direction. But it never did feel dead. It did however begin to make a different sound at contact before crack become obvious.

You might ask a pro at your driving range or club to hit a few shots with it.

+1. This is what I would do.

Good idea - get a pro to finish that POS off once and for good - or find out you need lessons. Win win.

There was an older gentleman that belongs to the same course as I do at the range about 2 weeks ago. He had a Cobra driver(dont' recall the model) he had bought from some "play it again" store. Anyways, he couldn't hit it worth a crap and it sounded terrible, so he had me and another guy hit it. All three of us hit the same shots, line drives to the right about 160 yards. Now, that's a an 18 yr old, a 28 yr old, and a 70 yr old all hitting the same shots with this club.
To make a long story less long, he ended up finding a crack in the bottom of the club. Cobra did replace it though.

Doesn't have to be a crack, the face cane cave in. Faces have a bulge in the niddle of the club so when you look ate the face from the bottom side view style it ill be shaped like this ( from sude to side although not nearly that drastic. If the face flattens then the club is dead.
