I will be doing my own study. I am currently a 13.8 HC with a good short game and a mediocre Driver/Wood player decent iron play from P-7 4,5,6 irons not so good. So I went and got a lesson for my Driver and it will also work for my long irons.
I normally shoot in the low 80’s I played yesterday with new swing and shot a 91. I’m doing a couple of very new things with my swing since it was my first ever swing lesson.
So yeah the battle is SHORT GAME vs LONG GAME. I will practice more of my full swing to get better then later work on my short game.
Oh yeah the goal is to become a single digit Handicap.
The theory I hear, is that staying on the fairway is key. I’m so used to taking a drop and playing from the other fairways I just became comfortable with it and I can always(90%) recover.
It got so bad that I considered playing 7 iron on every tee. But I took the lesson instead.

On my course its not really about staying on the fairway, but having a view of the hole after. Too many trees and curves to plan around.

that's what I've been livin off of. "Do I have a shot at the green?" but some courses are too much target golf.

A great short game will always win over a great long game...

Depends. Great short gamer who can't keep the ball in play off the tee? I'll take the other guy.

everything in moderation like someone with a good short game and moderately good long game will beat someone with good long game and moderately good short game

I really suck with my mid iron game. I struggle badly with my 4-5-6-7 irons, i always seem to slice with these irons or duff.

What I was getting at is someone who has a "great" whatever game will normally have a "good" other game. All things being some what equal, if a person had a decent "long game" and a "great" short game he would be the person who had a 'great" long game but a "good" short game... The reason why I say this is it will drive the guy crazy when his opponent gets up and down all the time from inside garbage can... When the long hit is putting for a 10 foot birdie and the guy with the great short game drains the 40 footer...

The one thing I will say though, it is hard to beat length...

Need a bit of both. If you're bombing it on every hole but then taking 4 more shots to get in then you're screwed, but if you're constantly taking an extra stroke off the tee you're not doing too hot either. I'd take a shorter, more consistent drive and a well put together short game.

My short game has been lagging lately since I have been working on grooving in some full swing changes instead of short game practice. My scrambling and sand save stats last night were both 0%. I shot 41, but easily left 4 strokes on the course by pitching/chipping past the hole and 2 putting back.

I think there are even more divisions. Some people are very good at chipping and pitching but can't putt, so you can have a 1/2 a good short game.

I would take the guy thats got a great short game most of the time. however I will say this, when I have a blow up hole (double bogey or worse) my tee shot is what gets me in trouble.

Well I'm confused now! I was reading "Tiger Woods How I play golf" and he said that you need a great short game for those times when your spraying your tee shot and aproach shots..... So I will continue to practice both but at a 80% full swing and 20% short game....

I figure you use your driver 14 times a round max and your short game (wedges/putter) a minimum 18 times a round.. for me around 35-45 times a round. Makes more sense to work on the short stuff to me.
