I started playing at 14, and I'm 18 now. I know I still started fairly young but I wish I started when I was 7 or 8 or something. My dad tried to get me into it numerous times but I just wasn't interested in it until age 14. I preferred much faster paced sports such as basketball, or football.

At around 50, after recovering from chemo and radiotherapy for bulky Hodgkins. Had to give up tennis, my main sport, due to peripheral neuropathy but I can still walk the course - my feet can't take much of a pounding any more. I did play a few rounds as a teenager but the game wasn't for me in those days. Squash and tennis were more my style.

I started to play golf back in the early 60's when I was 13 and played into the mid 60's. After I graduated from high school in 66 I didn't play anymore. Back then golf was a old mans game.

At 53 I had pretty much blew out my right knee from many years of hard core skiing and had badly broken my left ankle. All I had left was fly fishing when a friend took me out to hit a bucket of balls. All it took was that one bucket and I was hooked. That was 8 yrs ago.

I found a 6 iron when I was 16 and messed around a couple times at school when nobody was around. That was 14 years ago.. I went to the range a couple times 5 years ago then really started to play 3 years ago. From playing once a month now playing once to twice a week. So I really started to play at the age of 27.

I started playing when I was 6 years old. Will never forget my first club that my father gave me. It was a 7iron and it was purple :D Have been playing ever since.

Was advised to go to golf academy but my mother said that I had to go to uni. She's never said it but I don't think she thought I had it in me. With that said I never had the opportunity to take golf seriously as the only support I had was from my father (parents are seperated). I used to live with my mother and so only ever really played golf when I went to stay with my father. But I am now on my own and working so starting to get back into it quite seriously and dream goal is to be scratch one day.

When I was a kid (around 8 or 9) the local golf course gave free lessons and let kids play free on Mondays, so my mother would drop me off there at 6 in the morning, there would be a big (probably 12-15 kids) group lesson, then have putting competitions for prizes, closest to the pin, etc, and let us all go play 9. At that age walking I don't remember if I ever played the full 9. I definitely didn't take it serious back then, it was just something to do in the summer, but then when I was a teenager membership at that same course was $150 for a junior (under 18) for the summer, so same thing, I'd get dropped off in the AM and stick around til night. Played 2 years in high school, then gave it up during college and afterwards but I could always go out if the need for a 4th came up. Last summer I started seriously playing again with this summer dedicating more time that I ever have before. I'm 29 now.

Try to make a long story short. I was a runner most of my life anywhere from 20 40 miles per week. At age 48 got hurt, did not stop running tried to train thru it (stupidly) and damaged my feet and knees. After about a year of doing nothing looked at golf seemed reasonable enough gave it a try and was hooked!! Now 15 years later I'm a golf junkie.

I walk all the time and carried my bag up to 3 years ago and switched to a cart. Need to retire and play even more.

I'm a runner as well... Haven't gotten the motivation back to really get serious about running after having a tendon injury in my foot keep me from my first half marathon, but I still run here and there. I guess I took up golf again to figure out something else to do that's been nagging at me for a while. ;)

Started when I was 22 and now I am 30. I got hooked pretty bad early and saw huge jumps in play over the first 5 years. The last 3 have been pretty flat in terms of improvement or if anything I've gotten worse (besides putting).

I started golfing when i was 25 or 26. Baseball was my sport through college. When that dried up, i picked up golf just to have something competitive to do. I took to the game pretty quickly and was shooting in the mid 80's regularly by the end of my first year.

I started caddying for my grandfather at age 8. I had to pull his Bagboy cart up and down Juniper Hills in Kentucky. I caddied as much as I could, earning enough $$ at $1.50 a round. At 10, I got my first set of cleats (can still hear the clickety clack walking around the clubhouse at Juniper Hills). Played through my 20's & posted a 10 handicap in my 30's while living in North Louisiana. At age 48, I shattered my left wrist. Dr said really bad, when he put me back together, my left arm was an inch shorter. I asked if he could fix it. Two years & 4 surgeries later, with an inch of my hip in front of my left wrist, I started playing again.....+20 Handicap.

Now, at 59, I am a 14 Handicap. Hoping to see the 10 once again. I run a Saturday Game for about 30 golfers every week at local course (Pebble Creek). My plan is to play well into my 70's.

This is something my Grandfather gave me many years ago.....the desire to play golf....Thanks Grandaddy!

I played off and on my whole life (more off than on). My dad took the game up when he was about 40 and every few years I would go out and play a few rounds. Last year, at age 46, I started playing on a regular basis after getting my son into the game. My son started at age 10, played for about 6 weeks, took 3 months off for baseball, and started last July at age 11.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
