A friend of mine and I are pretty similar golfers, we generally play within a few strokes of each other and if it were a money game, I would have no trouble playing straight up with him.

The most recent round we played was somewhat interesting. I shot a 43/43 for an 86 and he shot a 41/50 for a 91. The interesting part is that my 86 (16 over par) came with nothing better than a par, and nothing worse than a double bogey (and I think I only had 2 or 32 of those)

I am a pretty consistent golfer when it comes to score, my round yesterday was 4 pars, 6 doubles for a 90 (par 70)

How ever my friend who shot a 91, had an eagle 2 birdies on the round, but still shot a 91 (14-16 he had back to back to back triple bogeys)

So I guess my question is, what is your handicap, and how many holes (on average) do you have a par or better? Additionally, is 3~4 pars a round for a 18 handicap golfer about expected?

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I'm a 13.6, and it looks like I average about 6 pars per round. If you go to par or better, it probably jumps up to about 6.5. Maybe even 7 if I skew it towards my most recent round (7 pars, 2 birdies).

I'm a 19-20 hdcp.. The issue is driver and chipping consistency.
I'll get 6 pars a game, maybe even a birdie.. but i'll have 3 quadruple bogeys from lostball/OBs.. etc..

but to 'cut out the bad hole' is muchhhh easier said than done.

If my irons are on, I can par over half the course. If they are off, I can miss 18 greens and perhaps save a couple of pars.

I generally play par golf with a few ups and downs.

I would say on average: 11 pars, 1 birdie, 5 bogeys and 1 double bogey (sometimes this double is much larger when I try to do too much after a poor tee shot).

I generally shoot about 11 over. A normal round for me is 1 double, 9 bogeys and 8 pars. Since I still haven't figured out how to totally eliminate those double bogeys and usually get stuck on the 'bogey train' at some point in the round, I don't score better than that unless I make some birdies.

My best round so far this year was 7 over: 9 pars, 2 birdies, 2 doubles, and 5 bogeys

Just looked at 3 cards from last fall. I shot 85 on all of them, around my average. One I had 7 pars, but nothing lower than par. The 2nd one I had 4 pars, but 3 birdies. The 3rd one I had 7 pars, 2 birdies and an eagle, but I also had a triple and a quad.

I'd hate to try and project anything based on the number of pars I make. I have been 3 under through 11 and gone 7 over for the next 7 holes. I have also been 5 over after 3 holes and still finished at 7 over. I guess the answer is that I never quit, so I may make 7 pars and shoot 80, or I might make 7 pars and shoot 90. But somewhere around 7 seems to be a median number for me.

2010 Stats (72.90 scoring average)

3.14 Birdies
10.40 Pars
4.10 Bogies

2009 Stats (73.40 scoring average)

I am keeping the ball in play much more often this year (more 3-woods off the tee) and minimizing my blow-up holes. Birdie production is slightly down but my overall scoring average is a tad better.

I don't keep as detailed statistics as others but it really can vary for me. If I am playing well I typically have around 10 pars, a birdie or two, 6 bogeys and then a couple of others. If I'm sucking it up then pars drop way down, bogeys and others goes way up.

For me the reason I am not a sub 10 HCP isn't my good holes. I can play great golf and give myself really good looks and make putts. But when it goes bad, I can make a big number in a hurry (and do). That is I think the biggest difference between a 5 and 10. A good 5 limits the pain to at worst a double. A 10 makes doubles all the time. I honestly can't remember the last 18 hole round I went without making a double or worse.

I'm an 11 handicap and my average scores over the last year are:

5.5% Birdies
42% Pars
41% Bogeys
10% Doubles
1.5% Triples or worse

So, I average about 7 pars a round.

To the OP, I know some 18 handicaps that make quite a few pars and they have many blow up holes. Others are more consistent "Bogey" golfers. 2 years ago I was an 18 cap and my stats were similar to yours ...Lots of bogeys with a few pars and doubles thrown in. I still make lots of bogeys but I'm decreasing the doubles and making a few more pars.

This is something I've never really thought about. Don't know why... seems so obvious, but I haven't kept track.

I hover between 4-6 handicap and here is an example of the last 2 rounds I played. (only scorecards I could find) Both rounds were at the same club playing from the tips. However, this is a 27 hole course and the 2 rounds were not on the same 18.

Birdies- 2

i'm also an 18 handicap and 3-4 holes of par or better is pretty typical for me too. if i can string together a lot of bogies to go with those it's a good round. start through in the others and that's when it goes bad.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
