Ok so I have decided to add a hybrid to my bag. I am confused about what would make the most sense for me.

Currently I am carrying a 3W, 5W, and Driver. I dont hardly ever use my 3i or 4i but I usually carry one of the two for the heck of it. I hit my 5W pretty great and I am not sure I want to replace it just yet but could be convinced to give something else a try. I would have no problems getting rid of the 3W. So I am looking for a hybrid that can kind of be used to fill in the gap of a 3 and 4 iron without being the same as my 5W. Does this make any sense? I want something to maybe replace the 3W and the 3i/4i gap...

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

21* hybrid would be around a 3Iron.

I carry both a 23* hybrid and 4 iron. Both are about 170-180 yards for me so they overlap. I use the 4 Iron for the Tee and the hybrid for the deck or rough....

If I were you I'd hang on to the 3W

A 24* hybrid would effectively replace your 4 and 3 irons, but would fall short of your 5 wood. 3 Wood, 5 Wood, 24* hybrid, 5 iron, etc. would be a nice setup. The Wilson Staff FYbrid 4H is 24*, is a great club, and can be had brand new for around $50. I got one for my Dad since I really like my 19.5* FYbrid, he hits it great (5 handicap), and my brother (11 handicap) has started throwing it in his bag when they play, tells me he can't believe how easy it is to hit.

thanks for the replies nuck81 and max power.

nuck81 - yeah even though i never hit the 3W it will probably stay in the back. i think it might just be time to upgrade it.

max power- well that sounds like a great idea. i will look into the 24* hybrid. i demo'd a cleveland xls hibore 3h last night and i liked it but i didnt love it. I felt like it should have been longer then it was. I will look at the FYbrid, thanks for the advice.

Part of your, and my, confusion is sorting out all the technical differences between the hybrids and related clubs.

* Straight-up hybrids have a shaft length which is between and iron and a FW. (say, 3i vs. 3W)
* Iron-replacement clubs have about the same shaft length as the related iron.

As others have said, distance gap is key for choosing a hybrid. Basically, which hybrid would split the difference between the 5W and the 4i?

And, which club would you drop to keep total # at 14?

honestly i would like to drop both the 3i and the 4i iand get a hybrid that is a "hybrid" of a 3i/4i. The distance for my 5W is 220, my 5i is 190 so just something to close that gap would be good. Say something I could hit 200 - 210 pretty consistently.

See my bag, except I carry a fybrid instead of a five wood I have already done this. If you aren't sure about the 3wood, consider a 4 wood to replace 3&5 woods and then a utility, like the baffler or raylor and a 4 hybrid.

Ive recently taken my 3 wood out of the bag and use my 3 hybrid which is a 20 degree. I can hit it basically as far as I could ever hit the 3 wood and can still make decent shots out of the rough and occasionally use it on long par 3's(200 yards+) so its a much more versatile club. I could really only hit the 3 wood off the tee or with a perfect lie in the fairway, end up chunking a lot of shots with it even then. I would add a 3 and 4 hybrid, I think you'll end up using them for those long fairway shots out of the rough, will be easier to get the ball up than the 5 wood. Go to a local store and try out some used ones and see what you like, thats the best way to decide what to buy.

I have a 2h, 3h, and 4h. The most valuable one is the 4h (24*), which is a great club to hit into the green and fabulous out of the rough. The next most valuable is the 2h (19*), which allowed me to take out my 3W and add a club for work around the green. The 3h comes along only when there's a par 3 on the course I'm playing that's in its range.

Try out a 19* and a 24*. They might be what you're looking for.

    • Context:  I used to play golf very regularly (and when I'm playing regularly, I'm on TST regularly).  In summer 2022, I got my handicap down to a personal-best 11.9.  Unfortunately, in the three years since then, I've had far less time to play, and didn't really make the time to practice.  I've played a bit more the past few months, and I anticipate having a lot more time to practice starting in about two months, at which point I'm hoping to go back to my old practice habits (practicing daily, Evolvr lessons, spending more time on TST (come to think of it, I can do that important last part now)).   But it was thinking about how different my nines have been a few times in the past month or so that made me wonder if there was a thread here about it, and sure enough, there was.  In the past month or so, I've had a 38-46 and a 45-39.
    • Day 2 - range session. Focus on tempo. Not as good as last time, but good.
    • Happened to me today.  I was with 3 others on a par 5 around 200 yards from the green and I watch these two young girls (200 yards away, I guess 8-10) walk their bikes out onto the golf course, head right for the green and proceed to walk right through the middle of it at which point I yelled at them to get off the green which they did.  On the next green, a guy who I would think was their father, comes out screaming at us and threatening us for yelling at the girls.  He came out a second time when we were on the next tee box screaming obscenities again along with more threats.  My wife doesn't think it's my place as a member to say anything.  Your thoughts?

You can do a percentage, or just do 100%. If they're already salty about a 12.4 becoming a 10… I don't know that docking it to an 8 with 80% will go over all that well. If the higher handicaps are winning way too often, a percentage is often warranted. It affects them more than the low handicappers (22 x .2 = 4.4, 2.2 x .2 = 0.44).
