So i just got off the course and i was playing with one of my good friends. He's basically the only one of my friends that golf. He's getting really into which im excited about. His goal is to beat me, which shouldn't be that difficult.

Anyway, on every hole, we'd walk off and he'd ask me what i got and no matter how good he did, he would only have a stroke less than me. If he really screwed up a hole he'd only be a stroke over me, no matter how bad he did. So basically there is no clear indication of how he played. i like to be competitive, but not when people cheat..

How can i fix this/ what should i do?

sorry for the long rant, i just had to vent a little.

Just call him on it.
you "what did you get there"
him "bogie"
you " I thought you three putted and had two in the bunker?"
Him "oh ya, seven" .

Do this a few times and he'll get the point.

Even better, if you would like to get him more into golf, switch the format a try and play a stableford, make you fixed score bogie and then have it.

Yes I am not sure why it is not played more, it a great fit for higher handicappers and keeps things moving.

My brother-in-law is a notorious cheater. I've called him on it numerous times. It got to the point I bought him one of those hand held stroke counters and insisted he use it. He refused and continues to cheat. Good luck with your buddy.

You could tell him he is making hard on himself to gauge any improvement by cheating and would give him a bad reputation if word gets out...that's if that matters to him.

when I know people are shaving strokes, I will count out their strokes on a hole and call out each spot they hit to. I have no shame in doing this right beside them and they eventually learn they should tell me an honest score. Sometimes I will intentionally tell these guys a wrong score for myself and see how they react.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

There's almost always going to be a cheater in a group. Count their strokes and tell them your count. 9 times out of 10, they'll revise their score.

I actually prefer for a little money to be on the line when I play witha cheater as it gives me a reason to insist he play by the rules and count his strokes. If we are just playing for fun, it may annoy me a bit if someone cheats, but I figure it not my buisness.

A. He is your good friend.
B. If you're playing together, you probably know how many strokes he has taken.
C. Cheating is harsh words.

How to reconcile all three is pretty tough. I have no good advice. Good luck.

Maybe get him to read this forum. I've always liked forums, and this one has shown me a lot about golf ethics.

I used to be like that and let it get to me. Now that I'm a little older I don't really care what anyone shoots but me. If we're in a tournament, I'll call them on it every time but otherwise the heck with them. Usually after I ask someone what they got on that hole, I just say "really". Then they go off trying to justify their score and I feel pretty good after that.

Well they tell you to forget your bad shots. Some just "forget" them before they add up their score. But I have to play with my handicap in competition on occasion so I don't cheat to get a vanity handicap (or to increase my handicap either). But on casual rounds (meaning nothing at stake) I don't really care what my golfing partners score and I just write down whatever they tell me.

Butch

One of my clients relatives played with me in a 4some. He would hit 20 yards deep into woods, and wow find his ball 10 feet into the thatch with a playable lie! I thought i saw him drop a ball from his pocket from the corner of my eye once, then at a party one of his buddies was razzing him when we were talking golf. The old chap said to him, "so Joe! how many balls did you have to drop from your pocket last round?" I guess hes been caught before.

Busted

I don't understand why people get so upset with other people when they don't keep an honest score during a friendly round. It's not affecting your game at all, at least it shouldn't be; if you let something like that effect the way you play, you need a stronger mental game. So who cares how they score themselves? I've never counted the strokes my playing partners made during a round - just write down whatever they tell me. If they get a better score than me, whatever. I know how well I played, and that's all that matters to me.

Obviously if it's a game for money or in a tournament it's a different story entirely.

    • Day 185 - 2025-04-03 Had a good 2.5 hour session at Golf Evolution. Kinda glad it was still wet and windy out today as I wouldn't have gotten such a good session in if I played. Got up to 93 MPH (with a pause) on my 6I and 130 MPH ball speed (on a different slightly slower hit, a bit more de-lofted than I'll want eventually).
    • I'm highly probable for the entire weekend, thanks for doing the hard work to set it up.  I can't wait for more details.
    • I take 2nd, is a confirmation that you can eventually win your major and also is good material for having a laugh about it in the distant future.
    • I'm a relatively new golfer (<5 years) in my mid-thirties. So far I've spent most of my time and money on lessons and actually golfing. I'm currently a 90s-100s player, but hope to break into the 80s with lessons and practice. I'm definitely not of the mindset that flashy expensive clubs will help me play better...I try to make the assumption that my equipment is more capable than I am. That said, I do know that realistically that threshold does exist somewhere. I just have no idea where. At what point should I consider an upgrade from starter clubs to something I can grow into and improve with?  My stuff: Starter set (Callaway Strata) from Amazon. (3w, 5h, 9i-PW) Gently used Cleveland Wedges (LW, SW, GW) - My old ones were from a set from the late 90s, so I did upgrade these. Gently used TaylorMade M1 driver - The starter set driver had a regular flex, and I had several knowledgeable people tell me I should have a stiff flex Thanks in advance!
    • Looking forward to this movie, it checks all the boxes for me. Indie Movie True Story Cast is all great character actors Walton Goggins! No Whammies!!!!!!!!!
