I was wondering if it is normal to tee up iron shots on short holes where you would tee off with an iron. Most people who I have played with say "Well none of the pros do it!" but I figure if I can give myself a perfect lie I may as well take advantage of that opportunity any time it comes across. I was just curious about what you guys thought, and if any of you do this.

I made a thread on this before.
It went on for a while.

Nearly everybody said it was better to tee it up.
You don't need to tee it up much, just give yourself a good lie.

wat...none of the pros do it?

every single pro on tour tees up on par 3's. you don't tee up like a inch up but you barely tee up enough that the ball has a good lie. Whoever told you pro's don't tee up doesn't know much.

Next time, tell them a lot of the pros tee up their irons. I don't have numbers, but would take a guess that most do. You can also inform them that Jack Nicklaus has said that you should tee up with every club in the bag, from driver to wedge. Why not give yourself a perfect lie when you can?

Ben had a strong opinion on this tee it up issue. He said something like, “I play for money, so I tee it up on par threes.” http://www.peakperformancegolfswing.com/to-tee-or-not/

Personally, I do not tee my irons up on par 3s, simply because I do not like the feeling of hitting an iron shot thin. I take it off the grass just like it would be an approach shot off a fairway. Always works great for me!

If there is a nice tuft of grass I MIGHT not tee it up. 95% of the time I will tee it up with a broken tee...just to have it sitting up 1/4". Who wouldn't?

tee up evety shot, barely above the turf, maybe 1/8", but like it's been said already, why not give yourself a perfect lie if you can? and I'd be willing to bet most pros use tee's on par 3's too.

If you'll look for the other thread, you'll see that when most of us tee the ball up on a par 3, we're really just teeing it barely above the grass to simulate a perfect lie. This is what the pros are doing, too.

If by 'teeing it up on a par 3' you mean putting it an inch in the air like I see some people at the range do, then no, most of us don't do that.

Having the ball 1/4 " off the turf increases your chance to hit the ball thin?

Why not tee it up? Its to your advantage to tee it up, and there are some tour pros that do tee it up. I tee it up on all par threes and short par 4s. For par 3s i tee it up barely above the truf. For long irons i tee it up about 1/4 inch so i can play a punch shot.

I use a 5 inch tee and have a go at hitting it.

But yes, I tee it up, with around 4mm of clearance...

I appreciate the responses guys. I usually do tee up my irons just barely, so thanks for confirming that it is a good thing to do.

I do unless it's a SW or LW shot. Makes it too easy to hit too high off the face. On longer irons off the tee I usually tee it up higher than on par 3's to get a longer and higher trajectory

For me personally I have a hard hook with an iron off a tee so I don't tee up but with a wood on a par 3 I tee it up low so I don't sky it.

Did play it last year for the first time and it is awesome.

    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.
