Well ever since I started playing 5 years ago.
I always write down like this for a Eagle I put -2 (not yet actually) Birdie "-1" Par "P" Bogey +1 and +2 etc :(
So I know its preference and whatever but Just curious how others keep score and how is it done in tournaments?

do you write the score per stroke like a Par is 4 so you write 4 not a "P" like me, or do you just put circles around the number and squares for bogeys.

I always write down numbers, and occasionally put something like "2P" to indicate number of putts on each hole (although I can generally remember most of my shots around the course).

I use the traditional method... that is, I record the actual number I scored. I've also been known to count puts and note those very small in a corner of the box. And then there's the complication of dots games. Those need to be recorded. And other side bets... closest to hole on par threes, sandies etc.

The card can get a bit messy and if you don't have a solid marking style you can end up with a load of unintelligible hieroglyphics.

I have a golfing buddy who loves to manage all the games and bets on his scorecard. And we usually have a bunch. The card is filled with symbols, numbers, dots and circles. Only he knows how to tally these strange and peculiar ciphers.

There have been a couple of occasions where his complex markings have sparked some heated comment exchanges between friends.

I write down the actual number and in addition follow the Scorecard software method as it makes it very easy to enter my stats after a round.

so far I've been doing this the least popular way. I'll try the other way next time I play.

The whole number. Never understood why anyone would do it any other way.

Here is one of my scorecards:

For each hole I mark: score/putts, Fairways/GIR, and up and downs. For example, on Hole #1, I got a 4 with one putt (4/1). I missed the fairway and missed the green (0/0), but got up and down (1/1). For the front 9, I shot 38, with 17 putts, hit 6 fairways and had 6 GIR's, but only got up and down 1 of 3 times. Looks like the short game and putting need work!

I write down the whole number. If I'm playing in a tournament, I don't keep my own scorecard, and I can't imagine doing anything else for someone else's scorecard.

If I'm playing a non-tournament round, and I'm keeping my own score, I'll circle or square based on the net score, but I write down the gross score. Saves on the boxes and makes me feel even better when I get a hard-earned par, or even better, a natural birdie.

I used to write down the score relative to par instead (personal card, never tournaments). However, I found this made it too easy to add up. I'd rather have to consciously add up numbers, rather than risk adding on the 17th tee.

I use a minus, plus , dash method. A bird would be -1, eagle -2, par a dash, bogey +1 etc.

Also I keep track of putts. -2 for no putt green, -1 for one putt green, dash for two putt green and a +1 for 3 putt green

makes it real easy to total score at end and keep track of where I'm at during the round.

I started doing this when I was missing a score card while playing 9 or 18.

I keep my score on Golfcard (software application on my phone). Although I'll be switching apps soon after the devs basically threw all it's customers for a loop last month.

Like so:

Key:
F=Fairway
f=1st cut
G=Green
g=fringe
D= Drop
d=duff/mishit
↕=up & down (underneath putt #)
s=sand save (underneath putt #)
#=putts (sometimes I put the distance underneath)

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

Thanks Enis750 for the idea. That is a great way to keep stats and I will use this from now on. Did you make this in excel?

that's what I do as well, except in my league where scorecards need to be turned in.

I keep score for each hole in my head, then write the front 9 scores in the boxes below the hole number, with the number of putts below that. I mark the back nine scores while walking toward the clubhouse. Last time out I took 5 more putts on the back nine than the front and coincidentally took 5 more strokes. I always know where I stand relative to par. It's not rocket science.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
