I think Kiawah Island and Sea Island would both make great PGA/US Open venues. Another one would be The International in Bolton, MA. From the "Tiger" tees, it's 8,325 yards, has a course rating of 80, a slope rating of 154, a par of 73, and even has a par 6. Under US Open conditions that would be an absolute killer! I also want to second Chilli Dipper's list, but I would add in Winged Foot.

that's just silly, a 8,000 yd course? nothing but a gimmick. top of the leaderboard: bubba watson, dustin johnson, alvaro quiros, bj holmes. everybody else 10 shots back.

Maybe, but a rating as the second hardest course in America by Golf Digest gives it some validity. That takes it out of the "gimmick" range IMO.

I like any course where length is not main factor in the outcome. I hate seeing the little guys left out of winning at courses like Augusta.

Why are there never majors in Florida? Granted we get 6-7 tour events a year, but a major would be a different animal. The Copperhead would just be sick for a US Open. The winner of the Transitions is usually no more than 5-6 under anyway, so let Mike Davis work with it and they'll play it around par. For a PGA it seems they look for courses with some scenery, which I can't think of any around here. Maybe Seminole?

Why are there never majors in Florida?

In a nutshell? Florida is too damn hot during the summer. The heat and humidity would take too much of a toll on the players, spectators, and course, and frequent showers would guarantee a Monday finish. Plus, the USGA will never hold the Open on a course with Bermuda greens, which excludes the entire Deep South and Southwest from consideration.

You can draw a straight line that roughly bisects Atlanta, Birmingham, and the Texas-Oklahoma border (sans panhandles). If a course is south of that line, it's not going to host a major, so long as the Open is in June and the PGA is in August. (Yes, Kiawah is south of that line, but its climate is moderated by the ocean. That's why Torrey Pines and Riviera can host majors, but courses in Palm Springs can't.)

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Driver: '07 Burner 9.5° (stiff graphite shaft)
Woods: SasQuatch 17° 4-Wood (stiff graphite shaft)
Hybrid: 4DX Ironwood 20° (stiff graphite shaft)Irons/Wedges: Apex Edge 3-PW, GW, SW (stiff shaft); Carnoustie 60° LWPutter: Rossa AGSI+ Corzina...

    • Agreed - only 5 players better than -4. Not quite alarm bells are ringing time just yet.
    • I don't really care what the winning score is. The best players still generally bubble up to the top. Also, second is three back. It's not like there are ten people within two shots of the lead.
    • Are these course getting easier? are the players getting better? should we not worry about tournaments that used to produce single digit winners are now producing course records year after year.  I am not talking roll back I am just curious why scores are so much lower than five to ten years ago.
    • I've posted plenty of positive things about Tiger over the years. I just like to play fair.  But if you want to see me praise TW some more here you go: 12 wins by 7 shots or more - Jack had 4 3 separate win streaks of 5 or more in a row - Jack won 3 in a row once It took Jack 172 more events and 9 extra years to reach Tiger's 71 wins by 2009 TW is the only player since 1900 to win a major by double digits and he did it twice 30% peak win rate is even higher than the previous record holder Ben Hogan (25%) 11 time PGA Tour Player of the year - Jack had 5 12 times lead the Tour in wins - Jack 6 10 times money list leader - Jack 8 Jack officially has 73 wins, but 2 of them are team wins with Arnie. You could argue he should be listed with 71 and I wouldn't disagree.
    • I mean that's clearly an opinion.  The funny thing is I never even attacked Tiger, I just pointed out that the other poster had a point when he mentioned that Jack had a longer career. Tiger basically had 5 years when he could have been winning more tournaments if not for his injuries. 2010-2011 and then again 2015-2017. Hard to make the argument after his final win because not many players win a ton after age 43.  If those numbers support the fact that Jack had a longer career so be it. Don't take that as an affront to Tiger.
