hiya,

just joined and posted my first post (thanks for the replies so far), and looking at my replies and looking at other posts, i got to thinking.....

with many posts by many people; do you, with lower handicaps listen (or read) those posts with advice from those with higher handicaps?

i.e. if you play off of 4ish, and you ask a question and someone who plays off 15ish, do you read it and pay it any respect, or do you jst read lower handicaps?

what about 15 'ers respecting 20+ 'ers?

curious is all, maybe i should start a poll

I that is great idea. I know personnaly i take advice from everyone since i am not very good myself

depends on the topic i think... i know personally i've dismissed advice given from a high handicapper...but if its a general topic of equipment, pga tour, etc then it's all in good fun.

hiya,

I get a feel for the type of game a poster has. What kind of game do they play and what type of clubs do they prefer to play while doing it. How knowledgable are they - real knowledge - not stuff copied and pasted from a brochure.

There are 20+ cappers who know more about equipment and swing theory than I do so the index is not that important.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

sometimes I read comments from a "handicap : +something" and think that guy is maybe a 24 index, bragging having a hc "+2.1" etc......

I'll answer this from the perspective of a high-handicapper in what I hope is a useful answer. I try to refrain from weighing in on questions that rely on the experience of having learned how to play scratch golf. That means I don't answer questions about "will X technique help my game" or "does Y equipment harm/help my ability to improve." I simply don't have the perspective to answer that in a useful way, and I wouldn't expect anyone to be interested in my opinion. I've usually GOT an opinion, but until I improve it hasn't been tested enough that I'd offer it to anyone as advice. In some cases, especially if no one has answered a question after some time, I might put it out there, but I'd do so with references to why I believe it to be correct, but that doesn't usually come up.

For other questions---rules, matters of physics, and pure opinion stuff, my handicap doesn't matter and I'll answer freely.

I'd expect anyone reading the forum wisely to filter responses more or less the way I filter my posting.

This is a good thread. I rarely offer much opinion on swing videos, as I don't think one swing on camera is enough information to give a good response. I have some sympathy for those just beginning the game who post a video, then get 25 different opinions on what is wrong with their swing. How confusing that must be.

Short story: I have a relative who played a number of years on the PGA tour. He was not a big name, but made it into the top 50 a few years in the 1970's. A couple years ago, I asked him whether he ever had a "swing coach", and what he thought of Butch Harmon. He kind of smiled and said that he would never listen to anyone who couldn't beat him on the golf course. Shows how times have changed on tour, but I can understand his reasoning.

Nope, people lie, especially ethugs.

What the hell is an Ethug???

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I have played golf since the late 1960s, and was a caddie for many years. So, I'm aware of certain changes in the overall golf game.

Also, I've studied up on golf club design, and can advise people on what a certain club will and won't do for your swing. I demoed several clubs from the Ping, Titleist, and Callaway lines recently when I was was switching out clubs, so I have some sense of how irons in these lines perform. As far as equipment advice, I try to steer beginners away from misinformation. One thing is that clubhead design (Players, GI, etc) is only one part of clubs. The shaft a person picks is equally important. Another thing is that you can work a ball with GI and SGI clubs, if you know how a golf swing works. From a physics standpoint, I can sometimes make worthwhile - IMO - comments on type of shaft or club a person might want to get for a given swing or situation. If a person seems to have picked up bad information in this area, I will point it out. Also, I pop in a lot of web site links so that people can get the details and engineer drawings on the topics. For video swing analysis, I let the teaching pros and coaches handle this. I can, however, identify an over-the-top move. Drifting in and out of OOT the past few years is while I'm a 20 HDCP.

first off we put in what handicap we are or think we are on this forum. there is no proof that you are really listening to 2 or a 4 or 8 handicap...you kind of have to take everything with a grain of salt until you get a feel for who knows what they are talking about. that almost requires a bit of knowledge on your part. i would suggest getting in close with some good golfers in real life (sratch, 1 , 2, 3 handicap) and or getting some lessons so you have some hands on instruction for someone who knows what they are talking about and also knows your swing and your game.

there are thousands of swing tips out there...but so little of it is actually important for your swing and your game. like watching the golf fix, there is so much getting thrown at you, none of it i would say is bad information, but you have to know what is really important for you.

My friends are always asking me for advice.

I can generally see what is wrong with someones swing as I have a very analytical mind and I have seen so many videos and watched so many events i know what a good swing looks like.

My buddies are all low cappers and still ask me to critique their swing with good results.

Its different being able to do something physically yourself than being able to teach someone the right way.

"those that cant, teach"

And having a good understanding of physics probably helps also.

After a while you can sort the BS out and tell who is legit. These are the people that I tend to take a little more seriously. I would also bet that I could ask them their GHIN # and they could back up their hc.
