well after watching the Canadian Open Tour Event, the Dakota Dunes Casino Open, I figured
hey I should be able to at least break 80 here.....boy was i wrong

Here's the course's SCORECARD & HOMEPAGE

Par 72
Rated 74.9 / 129
7301 yards from the Championship Tees

Let me set this up for you

It was 12º C
Wind was blowing 35+ km/hr
sligh rain for about 6 holes on and off (think British open weather...course is very much a links style course too)

Now i didnt play my "A" game today, but i played decent
This course chewed me up and spit me out...literally
I didnt have one flat lie, only hit 8 fwys (57%) and only 5 GIR (24%)
didnt even keep track of putts...i have never experienced anything like these greens - they were like rolling putts on your kitchen floor

It was a HUGE eye opener for me and how good touring pro's are...and this wasnt even tournament conditions

My Score - 86 (respectfully)

I grinded my a$$ off to get this too
I had 2 holes that i hit Driver, 8i into
everything else, was Driver, 4i, Driver 5i or Driver 5w....it was insane

I think even my "A" game there without wind, I would be hard pressed to shoot 77-78
Im just not long enough

I have some work to do

To those of you that think you have a chance at making it on ANY KIND OF TOUR, ANYWHERE.....play a course similar to this one and shoot 65..then your ready

I don't know what's more ridiculous, the fact that pros hit it 290 every time...or the fact that they are very consistently hitting GIR from 230ish. I don't recall the hole, but the par 3 playing 238 at Whistling Straits with NO bailout, and those guys were all over it. It's crazy.

I've played a few ~465yd, non dogleg par 4s and it's crazy to hit a really nice drive and still have 200yds to go...and that's a ho hum par 4 for the PGA.

hole 10 on this course is 623 yards

today it was a straight headwind I played Driver, 3w, 5w, GW and just hit the fringe - bogey seriously?? I watched a regular on the CDN Tour hit Driver, Driver to the fringe.....YES< DRIVER FRIGGEN DRIVER!!!!! nuts.... my 6, 7, 9, PW saw ZERO action today..they are as clean as they were when i started just no need, when you hit Driver 4i into every green

It was 12º C

I have no idea what this means. Hahaha. Is that cold? Hot ? Strong wind ? Weak? Hahaha. Im kidding of course. Just being a troll. Before anyone else says it I know the U.S. is the only backward ass country not using centigrade and the metric system. I wish we would I hate fractions.

That's insane that the courses are set up that hard for them. Maybe after next years sony open I'll jump on HAwaii Kai GC and see what its like.

Great thread. Every guy that asks if he can make this or that tour in a couple of years while currently playing off a 10 handicap should HAVE to read this. Maybe the link to this thread can be given a spot next to the underline button for easy reference haha.

How far do you average off the tee enis?

not 100% sure...maybe 245-255 average??? (w roll) maybe more maybe less??

i can bomb one out there as good as the next guy (usually a couple holes a round), but i would say thats a solid average I dont hit it very far compared to some w similar index's, but have a pretty good short game to make up for my lack of distance one thing that TV and pictures don't do justice is the lay of the land I could not beleive how hilly this course was even just looking fr the tee box, you think you have a good lie then you get up there and the ball is 2feet above or below your feet!!! ITS FRIGGEN CRAZY like i said above, not one flat lie today - ZERO oh and another thing - you cant see 90% of the fwy's from the tee boxes - a TONNE of blind shots from the tee and into greens going back to my home course now (which is about 6700 yds, par 71, rated at 70.9 / 119 fr the bakcs) is going to feel like a dream!! hahahah! its good to at least try hitting from tees liek this once you get your index below a 5 or 6, just for the experience why a 5 or 6 i say?? you would want to shoot yourself by the 5th hole i will golf this course a few more times this year, as they now have a special on - pay for one get 2 rounds so $30 today for 18, is a pretty good deal for this awesome course but ill play from the next set of tees up (golds) - thats a little more "in my league" PS - did i mention that the winner of Dakota Dunes Open this year shot a 4 day total of -26 ???? yep....these guys are good

Yeah shane lowry won my clubs championship then the week after played the Irish open and won as an amateur, after this he received an invite to the bridgestone, he missed the cut and in an interview he said he could not believe how quick the greens were, he said it was insane combined with the slopes!

He,s a pretty decent pro at present so Im sure playing on these courses for the first time is a shock but overtime Im sure you get used to not have the luxuries provided on a more resort course........apart from distance of course

I tell you I love playing courses like that, it is really hard to beat length... That is what I always say but I am a guy who hits it long so I can say that...lol

With superb conditions, you should be able to break 80 on that course if you've played it a few times and have your strategy down. It's hard to shoot your handicap even on your home course, let alone a course you've never played before.

That doesn't even scratch the surface of being ready.

agreed......

if i played this course a few more times, and had some decent weather, im sure i could break 80....but still....its long, tough and narrow keep in mind too though, its rated at 75 so shooting 78 would be my handicap
That doesn't even scratch the surface of being ready.

agreed again

maybe not "ready" but its a start!!! hahahah!

Yeah very true. The length is what makes it tough. Not enough birdie opportunities and too many "i need to 2 putt for par" or get up and down from 50+y because the course is so long.

If you can shoot 65 on that course 4 days straight then you are ready. As you said, the winner was shooting somewhere around 6-7 under a day on average for the tournament.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
