So I was wondering about the people who live in a geographical region where the winters are too cold to play golf, what do you do during that time to stay fresh on your swing? Where do you even practice swinging? I know of an indoor golf simulator thing in my town. Ive never tried it, but will probably this winter. What do you guys do?

A friend of mine is moving from Huntsville, Alabama to Yarmouth, Maine. I don't know how he's going to deal with not being able to go outside with his clubs for half the year.

Here in Buffalo there are a few indoor dome ranges that you can practice at, one really nice one about 10 minutes from my house. I don't like to practice on mats, but it's the best you can do during the winter here. I envy you guys that can golf year round!

The local courses stay open through the winter so I guess I can go practice there as long as there isn't snow on the ground. I usually pack it up for about 5-6 months during the winter. Thinking about possibly playing through the winter this year since I've been sucking and need to be punished in the cold.

I don't touch a golf club over the winter. Never have. Depending on how I'm playing, it's a welcome break. I just give my clubs a real good cleaning, tuck them into the closet and forget about golf for several months. When springtime rolls around again I just work out the rust and find my swing eventually.

Oregon and Washington definitely isnt considered Winter regions but it can get fairly cold during the winter months.

Back in HS, our golf season being Spring time, winter time was training season for me. Rain, wind, frozen greens, frozne fairways...all part of the game in OR and WA during the cold months.

Here in PA we can typically play through most of December, occasionally we can play in january and often the end of february the weathers starts to lighten up. I typically take off 8 weeks in the winter and i hate it...freakin hate it. I do nothing to get rid of the rust, i sit around and bitch because we can't play and spend several fridays (typical golf day for me) in one of the Casinos, usually the Borgota.

I'll usually hit up an indoor range/simulator a few times over the winter and I try to take a few swings every evening in my living room. Sometimes I putt or chip in the living room too. The wife and kids aren't so keen on that though

Like some of the others the courses here are open unless covered. Some will allow you to play in the snow or even do a charity event/fund raiser.

Other than that we either go here or do like last year and travel. Went to the Sand Hills region in NC in Feb. Will probably go again this coming year.

well i found out my golf learning center is open year round. Has heated outdoor range, not sure how cold it gets with the heaters though. Also has indoor hitting stations, no dome though, and a indoor golf simulator. So I will probably be hitting that place up quite a bit from november to march

There's a indoor sim within 20 minutes; but that's all that I got that's under 1 hour away from me. I try to make it out there about once every 3-4 weeks since I really don't like the feel of it but there's not really any other options.

I take a total golf break in the winter. Granted, it generally stays warm enough in NJ to play into November at worst without having to excessively layer up. One year we were able to play reasonably comfortably in January. I don't really mind not swinging for only three, maybe four, months - it keeps the girlfriend happy and the only thing that really suffers is my short game.

Oddly enough, I actually find that some of my most enjoyable rounds happen after the break. Expectations are generally low and I'm really just able to enjoy the returning warmth. Not to mention that I never try to play too fancy early on - I just try to make good contact on straightforward golf shots and play for the center of the green. I won't usually score a personal low, but the important thing is that I just don't care what the card says at that point.

Definitely a ying-yang philosophy. You don't realize how much you love golf until it's not there for a while.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
