How does moving a ball back in your stance let it go higher?

This advice, seen a couple of times in these posts is a bad idea for most. This is a shot where your shoulders are at a little different angle, if you are matching the slope, and a shot which requires you to keep your weight forward, for balance. even if you do not us S&T.; If you put the ball back in your stance and mis hit it even a tiny bit you may hit it into the hill and not even reach the green, or worse top it, god knows what your result may be. This is what better players sometimes do on purpose to kill a shot into a bank when chipping to a fast or downhill green. More club, and recognition that an agressive swing may not be a good idea when balance is compromised is the ticket I believe. Of course I am usually irrated with leaving myself a steep uphill lie close to the green, ignore my own advice and try a hero shot with my LW.

The advice that i've "read" in various publications say that for uphill lies, you want the ball more forward in your stance as your swing will bottom out more forward, and for downhill lies you want the ball further back in the stance as your swing will bottom out more quickly. Seems to work fine for me. Is this not the way you would "normally" play these shots?

Decide where you want the ball to land on the first stop and the trajectory. Are you hitting a low chip or a high pitch. Then go out and practice this shot 2 hours every day for a week.

I think this response goes to the heart of the problem here. In another thread, there is some debate about what is a chip and what is a pitch. A pitch is a high shot which rolls little after landing. A chip is a low shot which rolls significantly after landing. And they require different techniques. For what you describe--a significantly elevated green, the proper shot is a short pitch not a chip. Hitting short pitches is not easy and requires a fair amount of practice. Dave Peltz has said that the 40-yard pitch is one of the hardest shots in golf. Shots shorter than that--which still have to go high-- are getting into "flop shot" territory, which requires a third technique and even more practice.

Chip/pitches 50 yards in to an elevated green have always given me trouble. I always leave them short no matter how many times I tell myself to carry the ball farther. Any tips to making more reliable shots in these situations?

On uphill lies I'll consider going one, possibly 2 less club. On a elevated green I'll aim half way up the pin to the flag depending on how elevated the green is. Very elevated, aim at flag.

"Proper shot"? There is no such thing. You can hit it high and soft, or bounce it against the slope and bump it over the edge onto the green. It all depends on the lie, how elevated the green is, the fairway and green you got to work with etc.

If I have a short shot from an uphill lie, I go with a PW. This has worked for my last two sets of irons. GW and SW usually come up short.

Sometimes will use SW if green falls off toward back.

Hit the shot for 70 yards and do not think of it as a 50 yard elevated green
