My golf teacher has been having me hit drives while seated. As I mentioned in another thread, he is not the most articulate guy in the world and I don't even really know what this is supposed to teach me.

He says that when he's having trouble with his swing, he hits a few buckets from a chair to get it back in shape. He says it helps him "take the hit out of his swing".

Anybody do this? Can you help me understand, in a more technical way, what this drill teaches? I tried googling it but didn't come up with much.

oh . .btw . .he can hit drives over 200 yards while seated (he's over 60, too). My current best is just over 100.

I don't see the point with this drill. If he can't explain why you should do it, I suggest you don't do it. Could be to get rid of sway or overrotating the hips, but the hips never get a chance to move forward at the same time.

Whatever he wants to teach you, there are ways to learn it without sitting down.

Sounds like a good skill to learn - you wouldn't even need to get out of the cart!

I really don't see any point to sitting in a chair.

It's the all-American golf swing!

It doesn't teach anything, it's just a party trick. Unless you play golf sitting in a chair, it doesn't make much sense to practice your swing likewise.
When sitting down, you can't slide or rotate your hips. So by practicing that way you're conditioning your hips to be stationary during the downswing, which is something you don't want.

On the other hand, it is a cool trick... I'm just not sure I'd be paying a pro to teach me how to do it ;)

Actually, judging by what you said, it doesn't seem like he wants to teach you anything. He's just making you do some "drill" he came up with that for some reason helps himself, without knowing what it does to his swing.

Is this the same guy who was teaching you only things about your hands and nothing else? Or was what someone else?

Same guy - this chair thing is supposed to help me develop my hand action . . .as well as stop "hitting at the ball".

You really need to get these lessons on video - and The Golf Channel struggles or programming - this sh** writes itself!!

I wish I could because this guy is amazing with a golf club . . .even if he is teaching me total crap (which I don't think so) . . his talent is undeniable and fun to watch. He will sometimes grab my driver and hit balls to 100, 150, 200, 250 and never miss - a lot of times he'll even hit the yardage signs . . . then he'll start hitting fades and draws . .calling out landmarks where the ball will start and where it will land (ie . .this one will start over the yardage signs and end up by the left edge, etc).

I think he does this to convince me to listen to him . .but he definitely doesn't need to . .I already drank the kool-aid based on my progress so far.

Leadbetter uses a drill in which you take a very close stance (feet almost touching), and take easy swings. Helps with balance, shoulder turn and swing plane. You just focus on nice easy contact. After 5-10 good shots, you assume a normal stance and hit away. It has helped me in the past when I "lost what my arms were supposed to do". Could be a variation of it.

Yeah, this old timer sounds like he's ready to go out to pasture. He's got a few screws loose at this point. What's next, is he going to make you bark like a dog and ring a bell in your backswing?

You should get the tour tempo tracks set to dogs barking.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
