Of all the flukes seen on a golf course, greenkeeper Richard Mitchell can claim one of the strangest.

As he took his chainsaw to a leylandii tree, he hit the exact spot where a ball was embedded in the wood and sliced through it.

I don't believe it, first off, a chainsaw would have shredded the ball, and in the photo, it appears to be cleanly sliced, and directly in half. Second, it's a multi layer ball, which would seem too new to be imbedded that deeply in a tree, and the people in the linked story say it happened many years ago.

It grew around the ball. See pic.

multi layer balls have been around for longer than it takes a connifur to grow. And a ball wedged in like that would cut cleanly with a chainsaw NO problem

I've never seen a chainsaw make a cut that clean. Looks more like it was made with some sort of belt saw.

He might have found the ball when cutting down the tree, and then sliced off this piece with a belt saw after.

These types of things aren't that rare. I've seen probably five or six different golf balls stuck in trees that have been cut down. Why someone would "preserve" it is beyond me.

The ball apparently lodged in a fork of the tree many years ago when a golfer hooked a drive on the first tee. The conifer grew around the ball and it remained hidden in the screen of 15 trees."

How did they know it was a hook?

Richard is just looking for a little publicity, it worked.

You can tell by the fact that there is a layer of bark surrounding the ball.
