Hello,

I have made great strides in my swing (it used to be deplorable) in terms of accuracy and distance. I still have a long way to go, but no matter what I have tried or done, I still have a slice from the 5 iron and up (usually a push slice). This baffles me because my divots are straight. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Not a bad swing at all, although lots of tension there. You're coming across the ball slightly (over the top), and your transition at the top is very fast. I'd work on increasing your flexibility (rotating stretches of all kinds), and slowly work on generating a larger shoulder turn. Getting your right shoulder deeper and behind your head will help you bring the club down on plane, and increasing your shoulder should help slow down your transition.

You could simply have the ball too far back in your stance.

Your ball should be off of your big toe with the driver and work back from there.

BTW is that a persimmon wood? =-)

also you basicly have no hip movement

when you learn to rotate your shoulders it will cause your hips to load up and create a on plane swing path

You need to take a real swing video. One where you hit a ball because practice swings for the most part are different from your actual swing. You seem tense in this video and I think its because you didn't want to bang your club into the floor.

It has been brought to my attention that it is better to record my swing while hitting an actual golf ball. I will do this in a few days and post the results.

In order to keep both videos and also keep the last post clean, I am posting this in its own thread. I hope this is acceptable.

I would like to thank all of you who took the time to look at my swing that was posted the other day. At the request of some members, I have filmed myself swinging at the driving range. If you are able to offer any advice as to what I may be doing, please elaborate as I am starting to get serious with improving my game. Any drills you may offer would also be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Haddockd, Your swing looks very repeatable and resembles mine in alot of ways. That said you look quite young and if I were your age I wouldn't be satisfied. If you truly love the game and have the resources, you should definitly look into more wrist cock and having your hands more ahead at impact. You look fairly strong and I think you are being robbed of a lot of power. A video lesson would show you the biggest differences between your positions and a touring pro, mainly wrist cock and hands before clubhead at impact-no flipping. But like I've said before it all depends on long term goals and resources. Despite what anyone says, swing changes are not fun and require a great deal of trust and hard work. From experience the worse thing that can happen is starting to shoot good scores with compensated swing flaws. Then it becomes very hard to change. Good luck

Thanks for your kind words of wisdom. I have stumbled across this information (Hogan swing) before but had the hardest time with my arm position. When my shoulder dipped, my arms tended to go out and go off plane. Will keep working on it and keep you posted.

Hi there haddockd, I just watched your video on the range, look at the right foot in the first swing vs swing number 2. In the first swing it stays on the ground all the time and in the second swing you lift it up and get more of a follow through. Don't know if it was a different kind of shot but the first swing was lacking something, to me it was the follow through and with it went probably distance and accuracy. Another thing I noticed when the camera was facing you head on was that the hips are sliding back and forward depending on the back and forward swing. If you check out swings like e.g. Hogans you see that his hips turn also and not only slide. This can be difficult to mend and takes a lot of time (did take a lot of time for me to figure out and fix I should say) but is tremendously rewarding in power and accuracy. I would recommend some sort of assistance here, if nothing else than a mirror to help you figure out that your hips at turn do occupy less of a space and therefore the reference point should be in the opposite direction of the turn (hope this does make sense).
Regarding your posture, if you get more upright you diminish the space/room for the hands to travel through, wouldn't change it, looks ok.

I was wondering if anyone had an idea of my posture at address...should I be more upright (standing taller)?

Your posture looks fine. Arms hanging straight down, butt of club pointing roughly at belt buckle, shoulders slightly rounded, looking straight at the ball out of the middle of your eyes. No worries there.

Your swing is all arms at the moment. That's where the "heave" is coming from -- leading with your left shoulder and letting your whole upper center (head, shoulders, upper torso) go forward along with the hands and club. Look at Hogan again -- hips go forward, body turns, head hangs back.

Stretch.

Your back swing looks very tense, i would try to let it slide more. Just let the club works its way around you don't need to stop your swing so fast after you hit the ball. Notice how slow Hogans and every other good golfers finish is compared to yours. Else keep up the work many good things in the swing :)

try this drill

take a basketball or volley ball something in that dia. place it between your elbows and put your palms together

without moving your lower body rotate your hands, shoulders until you are looking over your left shoulder and then rotate all the way to your follow through

I have reworked my swing from my original post. I would like to thank all of you who took the time to post on my previous video.

I have added more body and less arms in my swing. I have also added more of a delayed wrist unhinging. The video is in slow mo and the quality is so-so, but I think it should be sufficient.

Thanks in advance to all who give any comments or concerns.

At the top of your backswing, you'll see your head is directly over your right knee. That means you've shifted way too far back. Try to stay centered over the ball more. Remember the back swing should be more of a turn/rotating your left shoulder down, and not so much weight shifting way off the ball. Hope that makes sense.

    • Day 2: August 12.  I did 25 balls of the ruler drill from LSW for putting.  24 of the 25 stayed on the ruler through 36" but some were smoother than others.  I suspect if the ruler (and goal) had been 48" far fewer would have stayed on.  I'm trying to go by sound, and not look, since when I attempt short putts, I don't want to look (although now I wonder if that's conventional wisdom that turns out to be wrong).
    • Day 17: did mirror work while watching TV. Working on wrist feels.
    • Day 315 - 2025-08-12 Got a little work in before Juniors showed up for one of their Summer Sessions.
    • I always knew it as high but never that distance was 90-95% of rating! That has always played to my advantage. I never have but I could totally vanity cap myself by playing **super** long courses that are otherwise super easy. There was one course like that in LA that I used to play that helped my cap like that. The back tees were close to 7k yards, but otherwise the course was incredibly easy. Wide open, misses almost always had a play at the green from the adjacent hole, flat greens, not challenging green complexes, etc. But it got a high rating because it was so long. So I could swing hard, spray and pray, and score well (relative to my handicap).
    • Do need a special ferrul. Thanx 😉
