So the other day I started a conversation with iacas about rate of closure. I was trying to pick his brain on what caused a faster rate of closure, what high rate of closure would do, etc. Its something that I'm about to start working on and was trying gain a little more knowledge before I go at it. Luckily for me, Erik did one better and actually analyzed my swing. Hope you guys enjoy.

Me 4-5 months before I started converting to S&T;:

Me in October

I have lots to learn and lots to work on. It would probably be going faster if I was working with someone, but its a pretty valuable experience in my opinion.

Erik's analysis

Good to see your swing here, good stuff. Post your DL view if you get a chance sometime.

One other thing Dave mentioned too... check your right hip and right knee in the backswing. Let them rise, straighten, rotate a bit more. That'll help you hold off the spinning a bit as well and will allow you to go forward longer as I'd suggested.

Nice looking motion. Stick with what Erik and Dave tell you, they have helped me a bunch with my game and knowledge of the pattern.

Erik, should he do the Elk drill?

It wouldn't hurt, but I don't think his hip action is so far out of whack that he needs to go that route. Elk Drill might be overkill.

You have any good video of someone doing the Elk drill? It's easier to show someone than to describe because you don't want them doing it wrong (a lot of people will push the hips forward like Troy when they have it described to them).

No great video of it. This is okay

Maybe I'll make one today.... cbrian, do you know what were talking about? It's about setting up with you right hip up and the right leg with less flex than normal. Basically to get the feeling the hips turning on their incline plane. In the video above Joe's right hip is higher than his left at setup.

Yea I know the straight right leg drill. I feel like my right leg gets pretty straight though. Right hip might be slightly higher if my hips didn't slide slightly towards the target. Its something that has improved as a result of improving my spine movement, but still need to work on it. It is kind of low on my things to do list, but if it will help I'll work on it.

I think it needs to move up a little higher in your list of things to work on. It's influencing your downswing motion and how far forward you feel you can go.

Update on my progress (arms better in this clip, but lower body not where I want it):

And an interesting look at my foot/leg work from yesterday (trying to shallow things out):

Much better with controlling the face rotation and right foot banking.  Just need to maintain your height better from P1-4.  I would say the axis is probably shifting to the right.  Little more right leg straightening, but definitely more left tilting, stretching out your right side to stay more level.  Like Clark on the caddy view.  The head lowering is an issue because it makes you regain your height at too fast a rate on the downswing.  Makes it harder to maintain the wedge and keep the hands on the circle.

Getting better... been drilling RoC when I can. I still get some decent over draws at times, but its getting better. Light years ahead of where I was when I started this journey.

Playing with some guys on Thursday that roll their eyes when they see what I work on, so... can't wait to bomb it past them all day. Haha

Here's a recent swing... not bad for the fourth swing after taking over a week off. A couple old habits creeping in though.

Nice swing.

I think the thread about the right elbow can help you. I think when you start down the elbow gets into a bit of no man's land and then you have to use your right arm to square the face.

A ton of good pieces though.

Thats actually what I had been working on. I was getting a lot less steep as a result. Was getting to the point where I needed to adjust my lie angles, but kind of lost that progress after this 10ish days without hitting a ball. One of my weak points for sure.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
