First off, I'm a golf newbie & can't even hit a 3 wood on the fairways with any confidence, no less a 5 wood ... but I do hit my 19° IDEA hybrid fairly respectably. Just curious if anybody still prefers their tried and true 5 wood over say an equivilent 3 hybrid ?

A 3-hybrid doesn't replace a 5-wood. It replaces a 7-wood.

I still use a 5-wood and a 3-iron.

Yes sir. I play a 7 wood actually. The hybrids I've used are hook city for me and I can't hit a 3 iron high enough to get it to stop so an easy choice for me.

I played a few shots with a buddies 7 wood last week and liked it a lot, so today I dug an old 5 wood out of the garage and took it with me to the range to try out.... I liked it a lot and think I am gonna practice with it some more then if all goes well start to play it. I have a TM 4 raylor but only use it from the rough.

When a company makes a club in the USA I will proudly display their brand here. All of mine were made in china by somebody making $2 a day. Shame on you Mr club manufacture.

Don't need one honestly.

3 wood= 15°
3 hybrid= 19°
4 iron=24°

There's a slight (maybe 20 yard) gap between the hy and 4, but nothing too noticeable.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

I am in the same boat, although I do have a cobra 5 wood that I love to bring to the range with me, and sometimes I will swap it out for the hybrid for the hell of it.

I use hybrids and a 5W. When I need the control, I hit the hybrids. On tight par 4's or sharp doglegs I will tee off with the 5W at times. The 5W is longer than either of my hybrids so I don't feel there is any redundancy in having both. If I am going for a par 5 in two, one of my hybrids or the 5W are what I reach for. Distance from the green dictates which I hit of course.

recently started hitting a 3 wood with consistency so i bought a 5 wood. so far so good. the hybrids dont look right to me.

Same for me, tried a variety of hybrids and didn't like any of them. I'm still a pretty good ball striker so I have stuck with the 3 iron and find the 5 wood more consistent distance wise and ball flight than any hybrid I tried.

I'm not sure...

In August I replaced my 5W - I was having trouble hooking the ball, and couldn't stop it worth anything.

I dropped it in favor of a TM Raylor 19*. The Raylor has a shaft an inch longer than most hybrids. Although I use an iron swing - hit down - it feels like a wood on contact. And, the Raylor is just a super club... may add a 22* if I can find one.

I had tried standard hybrids in 2008-09. Worked good out of medium rough, but went wherever it wanted off a tee or from the fairway. Since then I tested Adams IDEA and Diablo Edge Tour hybrids which work OK; just haven't bought any.

In previous set of clubs, my low-profile 3W and 5W were excellent. But, they got retired when I went to regular shafts.

Focus, connect and follow through!

. . . TM Raylor 19*. . . it feels like a wood on contact.

That's because it is a 5-wood, with a shorter shaft.

A 5 wood is easier to hit than a 3 wood since it has a shorter shaft and more loft. I carry a 5 wood and a 3 and 4 hybrid.

I dont use a 3 wood because I can only hit it about 5 yards farther than a 5 wood.

So i just carry a 18* degree 5 wood and then a 21* 3 iron.

Yes, I still carry a 5 Wood on occasion. Although I am thinking of getting a 2 hybrid to replace it.

I'm gonna say yes-I usually carry the Wilson FYbrid 19.5*, as someone said about the Raylor, it's basically a 5 wood with a slightly shorter shaft.
