We all hear about how the left wrist should be flat at impact to create good solid consistent strokes, so should the left wrist be flat at address?

I commonly hear that a neutral grip of the club will show 1-2 knuckles on the left hand at address, but i think this makes a slight cupping of the wrist when i address like this.

As I have identified my cupping as the major contributor to my slice, i am keen to understand the grip and address position.

I agree that wrist cupping is a major slice move.  But most people cup, or cup even more, during the swing than they do at address.  A flat wrist at address is a nice aid, but it is even better to be aware of what it feels like during the swing.  To me, it does not feel like it does at address (because of gravity).   One more thing, many pros/teachers, including Hogan, will tell you the wrist should bow forward at impact.

Flat wrist left wrist (for a righty) at impact is crucial for consistent ball contact.  At address, some pros have gotten away with cupped left wrists--Couples, Azinger, and Duval come to mind.  Having a flattish left wrist at address and throughout the swing and into impact would seem to simplify the golf swing relative to going cupped to flat somewhere in the swing.

After a lot of pain trying to get a flatter left wrist, I eventually I found myself assuming a traditional stance with my hands over the ball and my left wrist cupped, then slightly leaning my hands to the left to slightly flatten the left wrist before I started the swing. There is a drill on here posted by iacas where he practices his swings by starting in a finish position, weight shifted left and left wrist flat. So you can definitely start that way, but looking at his video if you started with a truly flat left wrist, your hands would be way ahead of yourself and it might feel weird on the takeaway as your wrist cupping doesn't match your body weight. Anyway, I found that just slightly flattening it at the beginning helped me a lot.

as a newbie, can somebody explain flat & cupped ?      does flat simply mean straight at the wrist joint with no bend or flat to the plane of the ground?     Cupped - no idea on that one ... thx

In the image below, "open" is a cupped left wrist, "shut" is a bowed (or "palmar flexed") left wrist, and the "correct" one is close to flat (the cocking of the club makes it look a little more cupped than it probably is in reality):
