Just graduated in Dec and received an email from school notifying me that my diploma is in the mail.

Not particularly excited for it because it's just a piece of paper, but it's something I worked hard for over the past four years so I've been wondering what to do with it besides using its copy to apply for jobs or grad school.

What did you guys do with your diplomas?

Framed it? Stored in a vault? Scanned it? Threw it away?

Also, is it required to bring the original copy to job interviews?

Thanks!

Congratulations on graduating and good luck in your job search...

Years ago the diploma may have served as a document of credentials, but nowadays it’s really just a symbolic sheep-skin. That doesn’t mean it lacks any kind of personal value – and the bottom line is that that’s an expensive piece of paper.

Your school will have all your academic information entered into a data base so you don’t need to bring either the original or a copy of your diploma with you on interviews.

I had my degrees shrink-wrapped and they’re stuffed into a cardboard box somewhere in the garage.

My father got his BS from M.I.T. , MBA from Harvard, and PhD from Stanford and I asked him why he didn’t frame and display degrees awarded from such prestigious schools… his reply, ”I know what I know, and I know where I went to school.”

My dad's the same way. PhD from Chicago and I've never even seen the thing.

FWIW I'm a freshman in college and when I graduate I want to frame mine. It's not even that I'm particularly proud of where I go, I just figure if I'm paying this much money to get the thing, I might as well make it look nice.

BA in Political Science with a Minor in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. Mine is just sitting in the case they gave us at graduation when we walked across the stage, I don't really feel like displaying it as I don't really feel I deserve it :P It's not that I didn't work hard for it, I just didn't feel like I worked hard enough , and some of my professors would probably agree :P

I got an associates degree in Information Technology and never even went and picked it up like I was suppose to.  I am working towards a BS in Computer Software Engineering now and will probably get that one framed :)

I have three degrees: medicinal chemistry, computer science, and French.

Go figure. I've always been in computers, so at least I use one of 'em...

I have mine in a nice frame.  I worked hard to obtain that degree, so I proudly display it.   If you won the U.S. Open, would you just keep the trophy in a box in the basement?

I'm a college professor, and in the Midwest most of us put our diplomas up on the wall in our office. I have 2 undergrad, an MBA and a PhD in management.  Students, co-workers and visitors can "see where I've been," and it starts some nice conversations:

"Do you know Mary Smith at State U?"

At least get it framed and hang it up at home - do it for mom and dad. Depending on where you go to work, it might be company decor to "hang your sheepskin" on the wall. And, don't be afraid to spend a little money to get it mounted in a nice frame. You'll be glad later on.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Mine is a BS in business management from Chicago State. Its hanging on my trophy wall in my home office just below my Discharge papers and near my Arcom, and the various business awards gathered over the years.  It is a testament to the accomplishment of a goal, the others while not all goals still signify the acknowledgement of various skills and performance levels. They say something about me. To me they say somebody noticed.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I had it put away, but recently reorganized my office.  I decided to finally put it up on the wall and display it proudly!  Don't discount the hard work, no matter if it was community college, state college, MIT, Harvard or Yale - it's your diploma and you earned it.  Now if it's a 'certificate of completion' or an inclusion in some bogus 'national honor society' - that's another story.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
