So I got some gift cards for Golfsmith for Christmas and I'm looking for something to spend it on.  I was thinking I wanted a new 3 wood (r9 stiff) but then I noticed that they still have a supply of the high spin wedges that they will be no longer making.  I tend to use my 56 Titleist vokey a lot and I've had it for a year and a half now.  Is it worth picking up one of these discontinued wedges and stashing it or should I just invest in a new 3wood?

I was using X-forged wedges but than for some reason decided to buy a Vokey 48 deg and really liked it so I ordered a 52 and now will most likely buy a 56 deg and be done with the wedges. I figure at least I have them both X-forged (which are really inexpensive right now $59 at Golfsmith with 15% off) I say go for it, the woods will go down in price soon enough.

Let me see, you are a 17 hc and are thinking about a 3 wood?

How do you hit your current woods? Consistently?

Most 17 hc can't hit a 3 wood consistently. Heck, most 9 hc can't hit a 3 wood consistently. Oh, yes, 1 of 10 shots might give you hope, but otherwise, ehhhh. But maybe you're not the typical higher capper.

I'd day something in the 17-18 deg range -- a 4 wood -- is a good use of your money. So is a wedge. But how is your short game and do you hit the ball to put spin on it, with the wedge?

I've been playing for about 2.5 years now and I've been working heavily on my game.  My handicap has been slowly getting better so I like to think of myself as a 17 for now (ha!)  My home course has a lot of short and tight par 4's (310-360 yards) and for a good part of last year I was hitting my 3 wood (2007 burner r-flex) off the tee because I was hitting it long and straight.  More consistent than my driver.  I like having the option if I'm not feeling my driver during a round.

My short game is improving too.  I use my 56 a lot....around the green, in the sand, from 90 or so yards and in.  I do get some spin on the ball, but not a ton.  I've been working a lot on my wedges too.  Since I've been getting better and leaving myself a wedge to the green.  I leaning towards the wedge but I'd really like to upgrade my 3 wood.  Last year I was fitted for a new driver (r9 supertri s-flex) and I think moving to a stiff flex 3 wood could be beneficial.

I hate to poke here but, perhaps his handicap has nothing to do with his ability or inability to hit a 3 wood. Did you think for a second that his handicap'd strokes might be due to his wedges or approach shots into the green. (where MOST people lose strokes in the first place) Just sayin.

as for the op, i'd suggest going with the wedge(s) for the fact that i know nothing is more confidence inspiring than being able to trust in a club, especially a club that you become 'buddy-buddy' with and pin it close more often then not. i JUST upgraded my 3w after 4 years of using the original cleveland launcher to a callaway edge tour. besides, 3w's will undoubtedly go on sale soon as the newer season stuff comes out. wedges rarely dip drastically in price like drivers/woods/irons do. also, once you're ready for that 3w, check out globalgolf.com for a 3w in 'mint' condition, it's cheaper and i've yet to have a club from them that wasn't satisfactory. best of luck!

Agreed, handicap has nothing to do necessarily with how well you can hit a wood. I see ladies all the time that hit 3,5,7,9, and even 11 woods (pathetic!).

On that note, grab those wedges while you can! I played with my bosses vokey's CC's last fall to see the difference, and I didn't see much out of the fairway, just a little loss in zip, but you can't spin them to save your life out of thick rough, which was the reason they banned them.

I hate to poke here, but I did ask how he hit his current woods. Consistently?

Normally, a high capper has problems in all facets of his game (I said "normally")

When anyone is asking about a 3 wood, especially a high capper, it makes common sense to ask how he is hitting his current woods and lofts. I mean, why get a 3 wood if you can't hit one anyway?

Please read the post. Unfortunately, I've been around golf forums  (10 years) and have been a ho long enough  (15 years)  to know a game is more than a h'cap ... but it gives one a hint, and then you start asking questions -- like the first one I asked ... 'How do you hit your current woods?'

Most people lose strokes in the first place from the tee and in the long game.

IMO a 17 hc'er can't spin a wedge regardless of how radical the grooves are b/c they don't know how to hit down on the ball. I say this cuz every 15 or greater hc'er I've seen is a poor ball striker and doesn 't know how to hit down on the ball.

OK, your new 3W will not be that much better than your current one especially if you were hitting it long and straight.  But if you are like me, you will find a way to justify getting the new 3W and the wedges.  If I had to pick, I would get the wedges first.

A tad off the OP topics, but then again it may make him think again between the 3w or the wedges.....................

Why does everyone want to spin the heck out of a wedge?  I just don't get it.   Watch the Pro's....sometimes they carry the ball past the hole and its a great shot as it spins back toward the hole.....the other times, there;s so much spin on the ball that it actually spins off the green or away from the hole.  So, where is the gain?  You still have to hit to a particualr spot......past the hole with lots of spin or near the hole and it stops where you hit it.....period.   You still have to AIM and HIT it to a particular spot where ever that may be with or without spin.

I want my wedge to stay where I hit the darn thing, not spin back 10 feet away from the hole, where I don't what it to go.  I only want the ball to stay near where I hit it.....and that does not take alot of spin to accomplish.  I never think "spin it", I think, "hit it near the hole" and then hit it there and it stays where I hit it.

OP - do your wedges stay where you hit them? Are they high enough to stick where you hit it?  Why do you want alot of spin?  Do you really need it?

Think again about the 3 wood.  I recently replaced my 3 wood and will never regret it.....this club is totally awesome.  I use it off the tees, as well as off the ground and its saved me alot of strokes compared to the old 3 wood.   In fact, I replaced my 3 wood, 3/4 hybrid and 4 Iron with the new 3 wood, 5 wood and 7 wood.
