lots of golf apps for both.  is screen size the most important consideration?  or battery life?  ease of use?

any recommendations from satisfied users of either? thanks.

I have a droid.  I use the SkyDroid app for it.  It was only $.99.  My buddy and I were supposed to go out on a Saturday but he backed out on me.  I decided to go anyway and they didnt let people play alone so I was paired up with 3 doctors from the area.  The one I rode with had the phone and the app and he showed me how to work it and everything.  Its GPS based and gives you distances to back, front and pin on the green.  As well as to any hazards, water or traps.  I have yet to play on a course that wasn't in the program.  You just have to search by name and download it.  I was told if it isn't listed you just map it yourself (tho I am not sure how to do that).  All in all I love it and would never buy a range finder/GPS as long as this app is available.

i have a droid incredible and also downloaded the skydroid app for .99c and it pretty much does the exact same thing my callaway upro does, and distances were dead on side by side. if the upro was still worth anything i'd sell it and use the droid. i've heard golflogix is a really good app and they have it for both. i don't think the deciding factor should be the golf apps between the two since they have great apps for both. if you are going to be using it for other things you might want to do some research on music, internet, email, text, multi-tasking, ect as well. you can't go wrong with either

i have a droidX with golflogix app and my golf buddy has an HTC evo with the skydroid app. the distances are always the same. the difference is the golflogix app will tell distances to water, over water, to a lay up point etc...his doesnt. the skydroid app might be updated now to give more info by now.

both work great IMO

I also use Skydroid on an HTC Desire and it works great. The accuracy is only ever as good as the people entering in the points but I've found 95% of courses online are good enough most of the time.

You can always map your own courses via their website and google maps. If you are just entering in the front middle back of the green 18 holes will only take about 15-20 minutes provided you know the course ok. You can also add in a whole heap of other stuff such as water, bunkers, big trees or other features.... I can't remember exactly how many per hole but it is at least 6-7....

As for battery life one tip I can make is alway keep the phone out in the open..... I use the mesh pocket on the front of my bag when carrying or the dash board of the golf cart if driving.... a typically 4-4.5 hour game will typcially use about half the battery.... Put it in a zipped up pocket and it will run flat in about 20 mins!

iPhone 4 with Golfshot. Works great. Accuracy is good, course database is really thorough, keeps nice stats. I'm as happy as a clam.

Why is your uPro not worth any thing?

i've had skydroid for almost a year and it has distance to hazards ect. you can either scroll to each target by pressing the up and down arrows to get front middle and back of hazard, or you can press the target button and it will show an overhead satellite view with distance points to hazards, layups, ect. for .99c it has a lot of features. i think they may have raised the price, but im not sure cause after you d/l it it takes the price off

are you deciding which phone to get based on which golf app is best?  If so, i have had both iphone and android phone, and would encourage you to choose the best phone for your everyday activities (calls, email, texting, surfing, etc..)  you should be able to find decent apps for both.

I agree definitely do not buy a phone based on golf apps. All the smart phones now days have good gps apps so you should focus more on what ever one you like more. Androids and iphones are both very nice but are different so I'd take the time to play around with both to see which one you like for everyday use. Also don't just lock yourself into droids or iphones take a look at blackberrys, palms, etc. It's not like 5 years ago there's a lot of nice smart phones out there now.

cause if it doesn't have a line of sight, the GPS still tries to find it.....eating up battery in the process.

    • Context:  I am on vacation, so I don't have access to my indoor practice room, and I won't for about a month. Day 12 (August 22).  Today's weather was not one where even I was going to be outside.  For whatever reason, I didn't do the putting drill today.  There was a drill I remembered from this site (the article was something akin to "five things you can do to improve that don't require talent") that involved having an iron along the back from stance, moving to backswing and holding, then moving to forward swing and holding.  So I did that for five minutes today. I also spent 90 minutes at the gym;  my main motivation for getting stronger is golf related (and I really should get back to Fit For Golf  specific workouts;  I'm not sure when I lost that habit, a poor choice on my part that I did).  Funny story, I spent 20 minutes on the Stairmaster today at the gym (the rest was weights and rests), a device I started with shortly after I took up golf because I read something about it in a Butch Harmon book.  I should be following FFG Mike's fitness advice though, not some memory of someone else.
    • Day 8 8-22 Worked on backswing length and getting some speed in backswing. Recorded swings. Was happy with practice session tonight.
    • Day 325 - 2025-08-22 Practiced for almost an hour after cleaning my cabinets to account for the new GEARS cameras and helping @OBlum for a bit. Exaggerating the same old things.
    • Yea, faster greens = shorter putting stroke. You can be more accurate.  Really, I think people who struggle with distance control struggle just as much on slow greens as fast greens. I've seen people blast putts 10-FT past the hole on 8 or 9 STIMP as much as 11-12 STIMP.  I prefer faster greens. Usually means the putting surface is better and again, shorter putting stroke.
