Hello folks,

It may sound like a stupid question, but how do better players(and pros) twist that club like a helicopter after a swing?

I have to say it looks pretty darn cool, and it's one of many golf tricks I'd like to mimic.

Looks like they're using their right hand to create that spinning motion, but I'm not sure how it's done.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Good question. It's really hard to explain, but basically you just flick it with you right hand.

Here is a good video of it. Tiger does it at about the 24 second mark. You can see his the fingers in his right hand flick the club, while his left hand stays relatively stationary (though is does move some). I'd go more in depth but I don't have a golf club (or anything like one) near me right now.

Erm... Isn't it just a natural by product of the left elbow flexing from P8 onward to slow the club down?

You spin the club with your right hand while the left just kind of supports the club.  I do it all the time and its actually really easy once you practice it a few times.

You use your right thumb more than you probably think. The farther to the right it is the easier it is to snap it left to spin the club.

Really?    Can someone explain to me how baseball players do those cool bat flips after they jack one?

It really isn't that hard.  Just kind of flick the club with your right hand a thumb as if your trying to spin it.  I actually have a (maybe annoying) habit of spinning the club into a "sheath" on my right side after a good shot.  Kinda silly I know.

It "happened" to me yesterday on the range - and I didn't do it on purpose, afaik.

I think it's the result of letting the club slide down the left hand where it starts to rotate on it's own because of the head, which puts weight out of the center of rotation (my palm).

Is this a serious question? You got a thumb, use it. This is no more difficult than playing with a spinning top, something a child can do.

Thanks for the kind replies.

And yes, it was a serious question.

I did figure they used the right hand/thumb, but they just make it look effortless if you know what I mean.

I just thought it's a cool little thing that kind of shows off how good you are with a golf club.  That's all.

Thanks,

Dan

Seems like a bit of a harsh response to an honest and genuine question.  It is certainly easy to do but perhaps not for someone who's never even considered it.

Sorry Dan but this is something that should come naturally or you shouldn't do it.  If you have to take lessons or otherwise get instruction, well .....

If the better players spin the club after playing their best shots (as they often seem too), heck maybe I'll play better by spinning the club after every shot.  'course I'll look a bit silly doing that after I flub a 65 yard SW into a greenside bunker.

    • Day 31 (1 Jun 24) - After Band's midday charity gig, had some late afternoon tmie to hit s ome easy pitches/chips in the backyard with the 8i, 9i and PW (these are some Maltby irons I built recently, so it was a session of getting used to their feel as compared to the old SLDR irons I had).  Also, wanted to keep swting torque to a min as the right knee is acting like arthritis is trying to act up again.
    • Day 147 - Club had a stableford tournament today. It did not go well.
    • I think I got to 10, mostly because I played Pebble Beach this year.
    • I was fully expecting the answer to be zero but apparently I’ve played one, Royal New Kent #2. I did not think it was a good hole. I might make a trip out to Bethpage Black this year and that will check off a couple more, but not certain it will happen.
    • Yes, but you have not played well in 100 consecutive tournaments like this person has. That is the point lol, I do not mean people play worse every tournamemt, but to not have one tournament round in 3+ years higher than ANY regular home posted round….is impossible.
