The UK supposedly use the term albatross more than double eagle. it is a rare bird and since a double eagle is very rare, and keeping with the bird theme, they chose albatross. which sounds pretty cool to say.

In Europe it is an albatross, I still have no idea why the US would want to change this especially to a name that is clearly wrong. Surely a double eagle would be -4?

There are many birds which are more rare than the albatross, but I'm not going to start calling it a whooping crane, or an ivory billed woodpecker.

I grew up with both terms, but "albatross" was probably favoured slightly.

yes, of course, there are hundreds of rare birds. but, they had to choose one. I can't find out why they choose albatross over others, but who cares. they just stuck with the bird theme is all.  I think you should call it a whooping crane. I think it would be hilarious to hear someone say it. "YES!! I just made a whooping crane!!"  hahaha. see, funny.

I'm about 99.999% sure he knows that, he's just commenting on the fact that it's weird that an eagle is -2, so you'd figure that a double eagle would be -4 (-2*2), but in fact it's actually -3.

Thanks Jamo! I knew a double eagle was -3. I would be fine with double eagle for -4, but not for -3!

I see. thanks for the clarification. I never looked at it like that. but it does make sense. that a double eagle would be twice as much as an eagle.

Yeah fair enough. It does seem like the US uses "double eagle" all the time. I wish they'd say Albatross, coz I just think it sounds cooler!

I've had a half dozen eagles, but never a double eagle.  Closest I ever came was about 15' on a really short 4 (285 IIRC?) where I drove the green.  It was dead-nuts at the hole.  Another 15' of roll and it could very well have gone in.  Two putted for a birdie.  -sigh-
