On Friday I'm going to pick up the new '11 TM Rescuse Hybrids (3 and 4). I want to trade my 09 3 and 3 Rescue Hybrids towards the purchase. Is doing so a straight forward process? Anyone done it before? Also is there anywhere where I can get a good idea of how much I will receieve for the clubs towards the trade? Mine are in absolute excellent condition. Thanks in advance.

According to the GolfGalaxy site, they use the PGA Valueguide for trade ins.  On the Valueguide the trade price for the 09 Rescue hybrids are between 30 and 35 dollars; the TP version brings in about $5 more.

This seems like a poor proposition to the OP.  Why not save your 'nearly new' clubs and spend the money on instruction?

I have never dealt with Golf Galaxy so I'm not sure how they work.  Here is what I have found out over the years dealing with my local store a few times.  Think of the trade in value backwards from the selling price used.  If you have a 3-wood in good condition and you think it would sell for $125 for example, they would probably give you roughly 30-40% of that price, or $40-50.  Depending on the store and how much used stuff they sell, it might be more, might be less.  They are going to want to make their money on a future sale so don't think a $20 profit will be good enough for them.  You won't get $100 for a club they will sell for $125.

As a resale business, they are in a position where you need them more than they need you.  You are not selling to them at retail, you are selling at wholesale so the price you get will not be very high.  A good club in decent shape, you will be able to get more money off e-bay or craigslist selling to an individual than you will by trading it in, if you want to deal with that hassle.  By trading with GG, they are eliminating that hassle, and by doing so, the price goes way down.

My local store had a policy wherein you could only trade a club for a club.  You couldn't walk in with a couple hybrids and an old 3-wood and use that total to buy a new driver.  They would take the highest amount and you could use that amount towards a new driver, but not all three.  I don't know if all stores do that, but they did here.  I don't know if that applies to what you are doing, just something that may come up.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I should add... if I was only gonna get 35-40 bucks for them, I'd keep them... you can sell them pretty easily on eBay for more than that.  Or really, they are just last years model, I'd probably keep them in the bag and not get the new ones, but that's just me.

I haven't heard of any store doing this... any place I've been has been more than happy to take multiple clubs and let you put the total towards a single new one.  On top of that, it doesn't apply to the OP in this case since he is trading in two hybrids to get two hybrids.

Your much better off selling them on Ebay.  I bet you could easily get double what the trade in value would be....

The advantages of trade-ins is you get convenience and an immediate price reduction on whatever you're planning to buy, just as the OP is planning to.  If you want to maximize how much you get for a given club, I agree with the other posters, eBay, or Craigslist, but you have to compete with everyone else selling their clubs and wait for them to sell.

I never do trade ins because of the low prices they give. I always do CL for selling stuff since it is cash and you can meet up with that person in a public area. I had a scotty cameron studio style. took it to roger dunn and would of got less than 100. I can't remember the exact number, but I know it was less than 100. anyway, posted on CL and got 150 cash. if you have the time, CL or ebay would be best. more money towards your new clubs.

Thanks for all the replies. I usually always use ebay to sell clubs but I guess its just getting a little annoying for me.  I just tried to sell both on ebay before starting this topic.  Both sold and one seller never paid and the other asked if he could cancel his purchase because he decided he doesn't want to pay as much as he bid for the club.  Then paying a percentage of your selling amount just to sell the club is annoying as well.  I guess I would just like to have an instant return on my club selling instead of waiting and potentially not getting paid at all.

Golf Galaxy will pay you next to nothing for the clubs, and then jack up the prices and make a hundred dollar profit. The nice thing is that it's immediate store credit towards your next purchase, but I have always felt that you get ripped off big time trading in clubs. I personally hang onto all my old gear, because if I ever want to go back to it, it's right there. Selling on eBay is a pain in the butt, and I guess you can always find someone who is willing to buy them. I just like having the option of going back to old clubs if I wanted too if the new ones don't work out right. If you are the type of player who buys something and puts it in play until you buy something else then by all means do the trade in and get a credit towards your new clubs. Good luck!

If you are not comfortable with the trade in allowance, tell them, and if they want to make the sale, they will up their trade in offer. I have traded several times with Golfsmith and they have been somewhat flexible.....If they won't up the trade in, then maybe the can discount the msrp....especially if you are trading for used clubs.

Trade in - no way !!!

The best trade in price you can get is about 40%-50% of the resell price, so if your secondhand hybrid might sell for $75 expect only $30-$35 trade in for it.

But you can sell it yourself for at least $60-$75 with minimal effort.

When you visit a shop to buy something new, you should take care that it is you that is in a STRONG position, if you start talking about trading in clubs you move yourself in an underdog position, first the seller knows you have allready chosen to buy the new product, and second knowing you are going to buy the new product, he knows you will probably accept a low trade in value for your old clubs.

Better is to sell your old stuff to friends, or club members or, through CL or eBay and get a really good price for it, and this cannot be too difficult.

When you have nothing to trade in ..... you are in the position to negociate on the price of the new product, remember that there are only recommended retail prices ..... and there are more shops, only if you offer a price that the sales clerk has to ask his manager, you are on the right track ...... I allways pay cash which means a 5% discount at least, and an additional 10%-15% is as easy as just asking ......... about no shop-owner will let you go away walking out of his shop without the new club ..........

I am sure if you get a decent price for trade in, it will be from the full retail price of a product, and NOT from the "retail" price you would get without a trade.

Don't feel uncomfortable if you don't get a price you like, the next shop is a few miles away...... leave your card and the price you are willing to pay, at the end of the day the manager might have changed his mind and will sell at the price you like (or not).

Is this going to work, with the latest of the new arrivals ...... maybe not, but after a few months ....... I am sure they want to move the stuff !

40-50% of the resale price is pretty high. From what I've seen at Golf Galaxy (hate that place), if they stick a club on the rack for 100 bucks, most likely the trader only got 30 or 40 bucks at best. And I don't know what types of shops you have around you, but chain stores will not negotiate prices, at all. I tried trading in a Cobra driver I won at a Junior tournament almost 6 years ago, brand new, although last years model, still in the shrink wrap, and they would only give me 50 bucks for an at the time 300 dollar club. I'm lucky enough to have a great job at a pro shop and be able to deal first hand with reps, because I really hate chain golf stores.

Id definetly agree that you should just sell them on Ebay instead of trading them in at GG.  Youll get much more for them on Ebay.

At chain golf stores there is mostly the PGA list guide what to ask for 2nd hand an d if you get 40% of that ..... it is the best you can get.

But overhere there are also some privately owned golfshops in which you can deal with the owner self, mostly they are actually already cheaper than the chain stores are, okay maybe it isn't in stock, but the trade in prices are mostly more inline with what you'll find acceptable not having to deal with the hassle of selling it yourself.
