I just found out that the reason Rory isn't playing because he doesn't like the course. I am a little confused, in my opinion this is a pretty big tournament to go out and try to win to really see where your game stands. So 0 points for Rory for passing on this tournament because he  thinks Pete dye designed golf courses have alot of angles that make him uncomfortable off the tee,he also said it's just very demanding off th tee.

Second,Westwood isn't playing due to confusion of how many tournaments he can play on the north american cut. That is another reason why i can't stand these top euro players playing fulltime on the euro tour. If he was playing full time on the pga tour he would of never missed this event, but that is what he gets for wanting to play in Asia and Korea. This tournament has more world rankings points then any other tournament. So to miss it on confusion is silly because i think he would of contended.

Maybe he prioritize things by other criteria than which events got the highest ranked field and most OWGR points?

I believe Westwood was given an exception so he could play in the tournament, but he chose not to given his schedule.

You are right they did say he could play at tpc  but by the time they did he already commited to play in South Korea.

Possibly, but from my understanding every one of these golfers want to be and stay at number one. I don't believe you would want to put your fate in someone else's hands, i would believe a golfer would rather lose there top rankings by swinging not by skipping the tournament.

Rory has not played this course well in the past, in fact he has missed the cut a few times. I can understand not wanting to play a course you don't like, hell I do it all the time, but I think as a Professional thats a pretty weak argument. I think there's more to it than what he is saying, and his excuse is just to fill the void, you know?

Westwood… lame excuse also…  Im not his biggest fan anyways, so I really dont care if he's there or not.

In my Ogio bag.

I am sure all pro's have the favorite and most hated courses.   It's unfortunate for Rory that one he dislikes and doesn't play well at happens to be one of the bigger tournaments with higher OWGR points.  He must really have issues with the course to not want to even try or there's a different reason he'd prefer not to disclose right now.

Well, there are no cabins to catch wayward tee shots...

Point 1 - surely if Rory doesn't want to play it that's up to him. At least he is being honest giving a reason saying it doesn't suit him and he doesn't like it. Who cares if it's a Pete Dye or Pete the Dragon designed course, McIlroy doesn't like it. Personally I think it's a great course and I have been lucky enough to play it.

Point 2 - Actually Westwood, like all the top pros pick a schedule that suits their game and the Players doesn't fit in. They all do it. It's about keeping momentum going week in week out so you can build up OWGR points and peak your game for the 4 majors - NOTE I said 4 not 5 so get over The Players being this 5th major . Yes there's the odd sponsor event that they have to go to.

franky21 you made you point on the pga tour thing on another post and your arguement was lame then as well. Anyway you said it "top euro players playing the euro tour" DUH! Plus 6 out of top 7 says it all. Maybe we should be asking why are the top Americans not playing at the BMW PGA in a few weeks as the Euro tour is where it's at.

Last night on Golf Channel they alluded to the fact that these guys have the same manager and that there is some sort of rift between him (the manager?) and TPC.

No great loss for the tournament. Westwood backed into the #1 spot to begin with and Rory is who he is. Let them play in their small event over there and we'll enjoy those who were classy enough to show up for The Players Championship. The deepest field of the year and second only to the majors in terms of world ranking points awarded.

Word has it on TGC that their agent, Chubby Chandler, is making a power play against The PGA Tour regarding the scheduling of events. (i.e. the date of this being moved to May versus March/April in the past?)

For me, it doesn't even begin to concern me that neither of them is playing. Lots of great players in this field, Kaymer, Mickelson, Furyk, Kuchar, Donald, Woodland, Glover, Watney, etc. Lots of good golf to watch and they will not be missed.

I didn't forget anything. Who cares if these guys take their ball and run home to cash appearance checks? I don't. I like Westwood, but this is his choice. Same with Rory. They are both free to play wherever they'd like when they'd like. And we as fans are free to offer opinions along with facts as we see fit. Great field in spite of their absence and it doesn't change it one bit for me.

What does playing in this tournament have to do with class? Did you miss Westwood recently winning two consecutive events? Neither of them are playing any "small events" this week. Two players not playing a tournament is never a great loss, but two players in the top 10 is a loss.

I don't either, but it's because I don't care for the event in general.

    • Even injured Tiger had a more impressive career than Jack against much stiffer competition. This was confirmed by Jack quite a few times. You want to ignore that, but it’s fact.
    • Day 201 3-5 Wider backswing and higher. Practiced consisted of mostly backswing today. Wrist arching through downswing still a focus on full shots with a pause.  Will probably have a 2nd practice tonight blending wider backswing into more of full swing without pause at the top.
    • Scooted over to the range today in the rain to see how it goes when I try to hit one. The rehearsals I think look reasonable, but then get worse when I try to hit the ball. I think it’s better than it was but still a ways to go. Including the rehearsals in these two videos. One dtl and one fo. I still don’t understand what I need to do on the way down to stop that fugly shoving outside of the hands. Seems unlikely that will just disappear when I get the backswing position right. I have a feeling that lack of understanding of the next step might be holding me back some.
    • Of course, injuries suck, but that's no excuse. jack was competitive from 1962-1984 or so. 1979 wasn't very good sure (first winless season) but every other season during that timeline he was in the top 16 in the money list. That is a crazy long time. And notice I didn't even include 1986 because he was "only" 34th in the money list that year and 43rd the year prior.  Like you said yourself Tiger was injured what felt like more often than not post 2009. When he was healthy enough to play a full season he did really well (2012-2013, and 2018-2019).  I like Tiger too but you are seriously downplaying what Nicklaus did. Nicklaus was not normal, he is a crazy outlier just like Tiger.  The funny thing is Jack played a reduced schedule compared to his peers and yet he still played way more than Tiger up to his final win. I got him at 477 excluding amateur starts up to 1986 while Tiger is 364 if we exclude his am starts, 345 up to his last win at the Zozo. Just pointing that out because you said he only played a handful of events in those later years.
