1. I'm not a fan of Tiger Woods. I find his actions off the golf course and sometimes those on the golf course as despicable and unacceptable. That position does however, not preclude me from respecting what he's accomplished as a player. One of the best in the game's history, Period!

2. Once again I'll state that I don't care what events players do or don't play in but again, that does not preclude me from commenting on the ones players choose to forego, especially when it's one of the biggest events of the year. Rory made a mistake as did Westwood, but they have their own agendas at play and I wish them both well. Their OWGR will suffer for it, as it should, but at least each will cash a nice appearance check.

3. And lastly. The PGA Tour is where the best in the world play week in and week out. Sometimes the fields are better overseas, but by and large the PGA Tour is where they ALL eventually want to play to gauge just how good they are. Westwood backed into the #1 slot having never won a big event on The PGA Tour. Kaymer, on the other hand, earned his way there. Tiger, when he was there, had more than earned his way there. and by a very wide margin. I can't help it that for 13 years the man dominated the world of golf and let most others in his wake. Talk to THEM about why THEY weren't any better than they were, starting with Phil. He blew more majors than anyone in recent memory until he finally learned to play smart instead of goofy. Unfortunately, he's again abandoned that mentality for the bomb and gouge strategy again and I watched his round today. Poor swings, poor management led to a 1 under 71 when it could have been a 66 or even 65 had he simply throttled back and played smart. But not Phil. Already 7 back he already has to hope the course gets to tough that the field comes back to him. Missing those 4-5 footers bit him again today as well.  Oh well....that's why you guys love him right? LoL

3. And lastly. The PGA Tour is where the best in the world play week in and week out.

And yet, top players are forgoing playing it as a regular basis (Westwood, McIlroy, Kaymer) and two of the top five just skipped the flagship event. Maybe the best in the world aren't playing week in and week out?

Those players are making the choice to cash fat appearance fee checks instead of playing against the best here in the states. Again, not really my problem.

Whatever the reason Rory and Lee aren't playing at TPC today, they're two of the top five in the world. You asserted that the best players play the PGA Tour week in and week out. Rory and Lee are two of the best players, and they aren't here this week; they, along with Martin Kaymer, aren't here week in and week out.

Rory responded by saying that if he is too young to decide if he likes a course or not, Butch is too old to teach. What it means is that Rory thinks he's old enough (why shouldn't he be?) to decide and that Butch is not too old to teach. If Butch thinks Rory is too young to play, Rory reponds by saying he's too old to teach golf.

Thanks, that seems like a perfectly reasonable response whether one agrees with him skipping The Players or not.

True enough that these guys sometimes support their home tours more than they do The PGA Tour, which is a shame. The PGA Tour is the gold standard of professional golf and has been since it's creation. I don't begrudge these guys supporting their home tours, but clearly they are NOT playing against the best week in and week out. So while the rankings might say they are # whatever, it doesn't mean they are always facing the best competition in the world of professional golf.

ok rory i understand you arent playing in the event so dont be so thin skinned when your criticized for your surly attitude about it

you and the so called number one act like you are enjoying skipping this event a little too much. most of us really dont care if your

hesitant to compete agsinst the best players on a difficult golf course to grab appearance money on lesser venues.

Butch opened himself up to Rory coming back at him. Not his business if Rory plays or not. I actually think what Rory said was funny.

Wrong the current best players in the world are playing in the Euro tour. Strongest maybe field maybe.

The only reason top non-american golfers play there is for the "fat pay checks" even when they don't win. Plus it's ok for you to say everyone should play there your american. Maybe the current top golfers want to live in their own country. Why don't american golfers get a passport and travel a bit and not think that's the same as going to a different state.

But if his choice is to play in mostly 2nd tier events across the pond, that's his business and his world ranking should and will suffer for it.

And Rory has every right to comment on comments made by others about him. Rory hasn't done much? Yeah, he just tripped and fell into that #6 spot on the OWGR. How about leading the Masters through 54 holes? He didn't win it, but that's from lack of experience. Rory doesn't play regularly on the PGA Tour, how can you expect him to win over there?

You're suffering from some weird delusion. I'm not even going to bother discussing this more, it's like talking to a brick wall.

My point is what's he done on The PGA Tour other than his win at Quail Hollow. He's a great player, but he made the choice to skip this event and it is my belief that was a mistake on his part. Time will tell as his agenda is revealed for why he skipped the event.

For several decades The PGA Tour has been the gold standard of professional golf. It's where players from around the world have come to test their skills against the best in the world. When players talk of playing against the best, it's quite often, if not always,  The PGA Tour that they mention. Other than The Open Championship, it's rare, if ever, that a player says "I can't wait to get to The European Tour to test myself against the best."   So like it or not, the best play in America. Are you guys really good at The Ryder Cup? Absolutely! No question you guys are better at team golf than we are. But fortunately, golf is not a team sport but an individual sport and individual records are how the best are measured. 18 majors for Nicklaus, 14 majors for Tiger, 9 majors for Hogan are just 3 of several of our/the best to have ever played the game.

If you'd read what I said was the current best players play the European Tour. Depth of strength most definitely US Tour. But your argument about Ryder Cup and team golf is lame. Last time I looked you didn't get OWGR points for playing it. Reason we win Ryder Cup is we put our egos to one side and play. 5 out of top 6 speaks for itself. Look can't dispute the 3 guys you mentioned and if throw in Tom Watson as well. For a lot of golfers it wasn't about let's go and play the best it was let's go and play some nowhere US event because it pays more than a European event. Sad fact.

I never understand these sort of statements.  First you say you don't care, then you say that it doesn't stop you from commenting on it.  If you don't care, don't comment.  If you do care, comment.  It's simple really.  It's like me saying that I don't care if people make comments like yours and then proceed to comment on it.  At the end of the day, what in the world is the point?

I suppose there's another reason why you'd choose to post.  It would revolve around either having an axe to grind or stirring the pot a little just because.

These guys play at a professional level and compete week in and week out.  If they choose to miss an event here and there, I say it's their prerogative.  It doesn't bar me from saying I'm a little bummed they chose not to compete but it also means I don't have any right in deciding where they will compete.

When I used to go to the most misanthropic golf site on the planet, TGC web site, henni was one of the many pieces work on there. I found his posts to be obtuse, moronic and nothing more than argumentative. Personally I'm glad he got banned cuz he is a dic.

With Twitter, I ignore posts like these (plus the drinking pics.) Some think this is what Twitter is mostly about, but if you follow individual golfers, you see insider pics, info and documents that the regular press just does not show you, like pin positions, official yardages, locker rooms, etc...

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
