Clearly unacceptable behavior from a tour pro and he should be fined. In hindsight, I figured I'd better add more to this. Coming off the green on 18 Charley Hoffman took his putter and snapped it BEFORE he exited the green. If I'm to understand the standards of some here and on other golf discussion boards, this is unacceptable behavior, reflects poorly on the tour, and should be punishable at least by a fine.

What say you SandTrap members?

Charlie has been known to be unkind to putters.  I have seen footage of him drowning one after it betrayed him as well.

Do you think this kind of behavior should be met with a fine? I believe it should. If the game has been damaged by the antics of Tiger Woods and John Daly, shouldn't we also call out behavior like that of Hoffman and of Rory Sabbatini?

If he is fined, you won't find out about as the PGA Tour policy is to keep that kind of info in-house. As for whether or not he should be fined, he's not the first guy to toss assorted clubs around. I'm not sure what a fine is going to do to change his behavior.

According to the GC anchors...he is being fined. Who cares. He can afford it. Plus it shows these guys are human. Free putter or not.

Okay. So now we've determined that NOW club BREAKING is okay with golf fans. Good to know. Means we shouldn't have any more discussion when Tiger lets one fly from time to time.

Why are you so obsessed with Tiger that you can't go one thread without mentioning him?  I can't figure out if you're a fanboy, or on his payroll to keep his name relevant while he recovers from an injury.  Hoffman lost his temper, he should be and most likely will be fined, but what does that have to do with Tiger?

He could have broken all 14 clubs for all I care. He deserves the fine but I can't say I would get all worked up over a rich guy throwing a tantrum. I think the news media would implode in on itself like a black hole if Tiger of Phil did it though.

Because how often do we here from the haters how bad Tiger is for the game with his cussing and club-tossing? Yet Hoffman BREAKS his club on national television on the green and that's okay? Last year or two years ago Hoffman throws his club in a lake and that's okay? But somehow what Tiger does is somehow MUCH worse? Yeah, right!!! LoL

Gotta love the hypocrisy of you guys.

Where's the hypocrisy, most of the responses I've read here agree Hoffman should be fined.  As for what's newsworthy, Hoffman is no where near the golfer or celebrity Tiger Woods is, so "with great power comes great responsibility."  If Hoffman crashed his truck, admitted to being a sex addict, and got divorced it would barely get mentioned on the Golf Channel, no less be mainstream news.  Tiger is under the microscope, just like Charley Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and many other celebrities are.  He reaped the rewards of it when he was doing Nike, AT&T; and milk commercials, now it's working against him, that's the life he chose.

What hypocrisy? Up to this point, you're the only one bringing up Tiger's club tossing. Your original question was concerning Mr. Hoffman. Let's keep on topic...

My point is that when Tiger does it, it's always worse than when someone else does the same or worse. Hoffman BREAKS his club on tv and it's "ho hum".  If Tiger ever broke a club on tv we'd never hear the end of it.  Heck Hoffman a year or two ago threw a putter in a lake at this tournament. Why no righteous indignation at those actions?

Your original question was about Charlie Hoffman and whether he should be fined for breaking his club. What Tiger has to do with this thread, I have no idea. I have no "righteous indignation" at those or any other actions because I don't care, regardless of which PGA Tour player does something stupid.

Again, please stick to what should or should not be done in this incident regarding Charley Hoffman. Thank you.

I already have. I've said he should be fined for his actions, but I'll go a step further. Any player who commits this infraction should be fined and placed on probation.  Rory Sabbatini should be suspended for 3 events for his recent actions, along with a $50K fine. $10K for Hoffman. Sabbatini should be placed on probation for the duration of the season with any further infraction resulting in his immediate suspension for the remainder of the season.

I couldn't care less and actually enjoy it.

The less robotic the players are, the better.

The game needs characters. OP, haven't you ever wanted to break a club?

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
