The Golf Channel, first impressions?

The Golf Channel on thur. and friday and abc and nbc on weekends would be great for me.

I have a feeling that as the GC matures and the staff gets sorted out, the limited weekend coverage from ABC/NBC won't seem so good. They have other programming constraints on their coverage time.

Today is the last final round of the Buick Invitational at Torrey pines and it is the tour debute for CBS broadcasting Golf....

well... I really think that CBS is far better than the Golf Channel...

Jim Nantz by himself can take down the whole Golf Channel team!

Nick also seemed more comfortable with Nantz than he did with Kelly. I saw some of the thurs/friday cov'g on the GC, and watched this afternoon...what a difference. I hope the GC continues to improve as the year goes on.

I don't know if you have noticed, but actually Nick Faldo looked pretty intimidated by Jim Nantz's presence.

On Golf channel, Faldo makes too many jokes.... with CBS, Faldo follows Jim Nantz with particular reverence.

I thought Faldo looked pretty sill -out of place in the booth with Nance. All he seemed interested in doing was to remind us that he was once a top ranked player.

Let him go wear his green jacket and sip Pina Colada's - I'll take Nance and Tirico.

My what a difference a couple of weeks have made. I'm enjoying the broadcast now, it has improved greatly. Are they broadcasting in HD yet?
I plan to have an HD tv before the Masters.

Personally this whole golf channel thing has got me a bit disappointed.. In Canada you now have to buy a digital terminal box to watch the golf channel, which changed from channel 40 to 144.

We have experienced a similar phenomenon here in the UK. The only way to watch PGA golf before TGC picked it up was to get a satelite subscription totalling 70$ US per month. With the advent of TGC coverage we are now have to get a further subsription of 28$ US per month! as well as the origianl subscription to pick up the US majors. Bit of a sting for regular golf on a Sunday night.

Having said that I think the coverage of TGC is excellent. Faldo provides excellent insight into what the players are thinking, past experience etc while Tilghman does an excellent "straight man" job. Perhaps this is a my "limey" slanted view of things but I will be sticking with my subscription for the time being, mainly due to Mr Faldo.

So what's up with the Golf Channel's highly touted flagship broadcast team? Three pro tours on TGC Friday and Kelly and Nick are nowhere to be seen??? I believe this is the second week in a row that Faldo has been absent.

Seems a strange way to sell the product. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Their on air presentation is just not good. Faldo is so full of himself he can let the players we are watching have any credit for their peroformanc and Kelly sounds like she is just their to boost his ego and make adoring coomments about, his clothes, his game, his car ... whatever.

The Sony was their debut and TGC spent time and money on videos of them surfing and buying Hawiian shirts. That's not why I watch golf. There are so many good announcers out there - TGC just made a mistake and is probably trying to correct it. I heard they tried to lure Jim Nance and lost the dollar war. The good news is Nance was given a free hand at productive artistry over at CBS and has colorized the original footage of Arnie's win at the '60 Masters which will air before the Sunday telecast of this year's masters. I was wondering the same thing myself. I only thing I can think of as that since the cover was leading into NBC cover, part of the NBC team did the first two days. But it still makes no sense as it was supposed to be Kelly and Nick who I personally have no problem with. Last time I checked the golf channel website there was no metion of it.

I'm wondering what's happened to Kelly Tilghman? I saw her on GC the other nite, and today, Rich Lerner is doing the play by play, along side Nick Faldo.

I must say that IMHO, Rich is a far superior pbp guy, and his voice doesn't have the annoyance factor that Kelly's does.

I would guess that focus groups didn't like her pbp, and that's why she's back at the GC desk?

Kelly couldn't break the habit of using a tired old duffer's cliche everytime she made a comment. Plus, her facts were often wrong.
