Golf Pride Tour Velvet vs Tour Wrap 2G

Hey Guys

So this coming week I'm taking in my Callaway 18's to have a little repair work done and to get them all regripped.

I can't choose between these 2 grips and wanted to know if anyone has any input.

The tour velvet seems like a good, pretty standard grip that I'm sure will work great.

However, the Wrap 2G felt amazing but as it doesnt come standard on any clubs, there were no clubs I could swing and get a feel for what it would be like to have my clubs gripped with it.

Does anyone use the Tour Wrap 2G? what are your experiences with this grip. It's very different to any grip I've had on any of my clubs so I'm a bit scared to just go ahead and do it and find that my game falls to pieces :)

The tour velvet BCT cord is also an option. How the heck do I choose a grip!? there's so many choices.

When I was choosing new grips, I bought a single grip in my top 3 choices.  Gripped three consecutive clubs (ie  6-7-8i), went to the range and hit a small bucket with those clubs.  From that I felt I could make a relatively good decision.  Also you are only out a few bucks for the 2 you didn't choose rather than gripping your whole set and finding out later you made a mistake.

That's how I would go about it as well. Once you find a feel that you like, stick with it and have the rest of the clubs gripped in he same manner.

In the grand scheme of things grips are probably the least important part of a club to actual score. So... if you really feel comfortable with one of the grips youve tried why not just take it?

Obviously if you hate a grip thats bad but if it feels nice and you like it hey go for it. Although... I would recommend you try to swing it more then a time or two at the shop. Get the one your leaning towards put it on a club go hit a bucket. Does it still feel good when its wet? Sweaty? If you get dirt on it will it wash off easy?

Ive only regripped my clubs once. What I did was got the grip I was thinking about and stuck it on my wedge. I used it for like a month and It was still feeling, working and washing good and it did not show much wear so I went and got the rest of em. If you learn how to grip yourself even if you don't like it your only out less then $10.

If you do learn to grip yourself don't believe what they sell you at most shops. Their special "Grip Solvent" is just paint paint thinner and you don't need special grip tape either. "Grip-Tape" is just dual sided masking tape.

Also wanted to add, if you happen to be in possession of an air compressor you don't need any solvent at all. (Practice with your old grips first for this method)

The grip is your only connection to the club, so don't short change yourself with your selection.

FWIW, I tried a Tour Wrap 2G on my driver recently and I replaced it immediately after getting back home.  It was soooo tacky that any dust at all will stick to it.  By the time I got to the CC, it was very grimy (I travel 2 miles of dirt road to get to my house).  I found I was wiping it before every time I used it, it literally felt like my kids had rolled it through the dirt!

I have the Tour Velvets on everything now and really like them.  Oh, and if you have an air compressor, blow them puppies on!  I use 3 wraps of blue painters tape on the wedges, but no tape at all on the irons.  On and off in seconds.  No fuss, no mess, and you can play them immediately.

I used mostly rubbery wraps and I can tell you these things will rip on you if your not careful with the air. When I did my first one with an old rubber grip I cracked it pretty good in 3 or 4 spots.

Set the regulator to 40-50 psi max, and use a slip over tube (2" PVC works great) when taking any old or used on off, and use shorts bursts.  I sure wouldn't install old grips this way, but for installing new grips, or replacing last seasons grips, it's the nuts!

I tend to believe that the grip is extremely important because it is the only part of the club that is in contact with your body and is so critical to the "feel" component especially  with the wedges.

I have been using the Tour Wrap (now the Tour Wrap 2G) for almost 20 years. I got turned on to them by a friend who was a pro that went on to the PGA Tour. He did not have money for gloves and would wet one end of his towel and wipe the grip down and then dry it with the other end before most shots (especially in the humid summer-time). I quickly followed his lead and have been doing it the same way ever since. Whenever I get a new club, I immediately regrip to the Tour Wrap. I have tried the velvet, but have never stuck with it. The velvet feels a little thin, and the wrap feels soft, but stable.

Another thing that I do is that I use the Tour Wrap in the .580 size with one layer of tape. This became standard issue starting in the late 90s with OEMs, especially for their player's clubs.

Grips are important but really what is the difference between two grips that you really like? In my mind almost none. If I try 5 grips and I like all of em, i just buy the cheapest one.

I guess you can go that route, but I have been around long enough to know that not all grips are created equal and I just like them how I like them.

I have the Tour Wrap 2G on 3 of my drivers, 1 mid-size, 2 regular with 4 wraps of tape on the bottom half to build the size and take away some of the taper.  I like the feel and tackiness.  The Tour Velvet feels hard and slick to me, I don't like them.  My new Adams A4,s came with Lamkin Crossline Tour's on them and they're very similar to the Tour Velvet, I got rid of them immediately and put on Lamkin Performance Plus 3Gen mid-size.  They have a surface pattern similar to a Tour Velvet but more tacky and they're supposed to reduce shock, 12 rounds with them and I love them.

Some people use cord grips and swear by them, I think there awful, so there you go, everyone has a different feel they like.

Do you guys play around with colours for your grips? Or just the stock black? I'm assuming the white tour wrap's would get dirty as hell so black is prob the go-to colour although red could be quite snazzy :)

That's what she said...colors only come in the .600 size and do not get that dirty. I have a white one on a driver (.600 on a .625 shaft for those keeping score) that I gave to my brother. If you go Tour Wrap, just give them a quick towel wipe every now and then. I wipe them down almost every time to keep them clean and tacky. Enis750 swears by wiping white grips down with brake cleaner, but there are other ways to keep them white. Good luck.

I got my irons regripped with golf pride tour velvet.  They are a popular grip, its an improvement over the stock grips and for $4.50 a grip, very reasonable.   I like having the same grips on every club except driver and putter, i prefer oversize grips on both as it helps with feel on putter and I feel it gives me a more powerful grip to rip it with the driver.

Big fan of the Tour Wrap 2G.  I use red ones, look great and don't get dirty quickly.  As stated, a quick wipe down once in a while does wonders.  Extra bonus that they're one of the cheaper grips available.

As things stand I think I'm going to go for the Tour Wrap. They feel really good to me and my hands don't tend to sweat at all when I play so they should be good. I find that cord grips tend to give my hands quite a workover and I'm worried the tour velvet will do that same.
