Well, went to the driving range today...first time I've hit a golf ball in well over a year. The first 10 or so were ugly, but I hit a large bucket (105 total balls) and by the 40th or so I was hitting pretty solid drives, just about 200 yards (I'm only 15). But every single one went to the right towards the end of it's flight. They would go straight for about 100 yards, and then curve right the last 100 yards. It wasn't windy so it wasn't the wind.

Every single one was a fade, and I wasn't setting up for a fade. I even tried setting up for a draw and closed the clubface, but it still did the same thing.

So why was this happening, and what can I do to fix it?

Fix your grip..rotate your left hand so you can see 3-4 knucKles. Cured mine and i havent sliced since

Rotate it in which direction? Left or right?

Quite likely that your upper center (head/chest) is going forward into impact. With the driver, it's crucial to stay behind the ball. Here are two useful takes on some setup and swing thoughts that may help you. They don't agree on every point, but you can see the common thread:

There may be no golf ball there, but that IS my swing. I don't change anything when I really hit a ball. I know that that video is as close as possible to my actual swing. And I see the issues in it now.

No offense intended here, but if your practice swing is the same as your full swing, you'll be the first golfer in the history of the world to be able to say that.

MrElculver,  I think what iacas is trying to point out is that you should try to get a video of yourself actually out there hitting a golf ball.  He's right, though.  There aren't a lot of people out there who make the EXACT same swing from their practice swing to actual swing.  Even if you think you're replicating the exact swing, chances are you're not.  It's just the science of our golf swings.  What we feel isn't necessarily what is .

Because of this, it's tough to provide truly useful feedback to help you with your 'true' swing since we're not really seeing it.

For starters, do you usually put the ball that close to the middle of your stance?  Depending on the timing if your hips and upper body, this can cause your point of impact to occur before your hands begin to clear, thus leaving your face open.

Take your camera out on the range and record a few swings!

I fixed that for you.

McEluv... please start a "My Swing" thread with some actual video of you hitting a golf ball from good angles. Read " Filming your Golf Swing ."

A lot to think about in that last video. One thing that has helped me with the driver (as a habitual fader/slicer) was to finally understand that I needed to swing more to the right right in order to curve the ball less to the right . Took me ages to get my head around, because it doesn't sit well. You think you're just going to start hitting push slices instead of pull cuts. But Andrew Rice does a good job of explaining why in this clip.

Great vid Stretch, the last one.  It took me some time also to get my head wrapped around all the backwards thinking in this crazy game.... after all, it truly is a game of opposites.  Swing right to keep from slicing right???!!  Swing easier to hit farther??!!  Hit "down" on the ball to get it "up" into the air?!?  WTH?  lol

    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
    • Yes, but season 2 being all of six episodes is a bit of a let-down, even if the season itself wasn't.
