Yeah better said Erik. I guess I would have been better to say, she certainly has not lived up to the hype, though I think that is due largely to misguidance by a certain person in her inner circle rather than her own fault

I think the point remains that the top golfers might make more, but the average golfers aren't guaranteed squat and make considerably less than "league minimum" in some of the other sports. The fifth best player on a single NHL team, for example, might make $5M/year. The dropoff in golf is sharp.

She's also still a good student at a pretty decent college. :-)

This post made me curious, so I took a few minutes to figure it out. The average for the fifth higest played on each team is $3,923,000.  When Stamkos, Doughty, Parise and Weber sign thier huge RFA deals that number will move to $3,973,400.

The only team with the 5th highest player getting $5M is the Blackhawks with Hossa at $5,275,000. When Parise signs his big deal there will be 2 teams at that point.

If I went to that school I'd wonder, "why isn't the best female golfer on campus on the golf team? Wait, do we even have a girls golf team? Hey, wait another minute, who cares?"

Good. That's enough to justify me saying "might."

Wie (and others) demonstrated marketing and potential are just as important as game. She also demostrates that looking the PGA(or LPGA) money list is only 1/3 of picture. You need to look at sponsers and appearence fees to figure out their total income.

The average pga guy make about or more (the min in most leagues is like 500k. It goes up to around a million if you have 10 years of experience) 90th on the pga money list is ~1 million). Individual sports have sharp drop offs because the bottom players add little value to the sport.

And if your a PGA guy, you should be glad your not a MLS player....

Golf and tennis are very different sports from football and basketball. Individual vs. team for achievements.  Imagine if Tiger never won a major because his team stunk (think Buffalo Bills).

And the comment about having 125 player cards --in tennis, you don't win, you don't play--period. There are many tennis players out there that play 3-4 matches just to get into a major tournament.

Not like she could play anyway, since she's a professional athlete.

Anyway, one part I thought was kind of dumb was this:

Quote:
Remember Trevor Immelman? Good-looking kid? Won the 2008 Masters? If he were in the NFL, he'd have signed a five-year deal for $75 million. Instead, he goes out and can't find a fairway with a course map, makes $1.3 million over the next three years, and must be wishing he had gone on to optometry school.

Makes it sound like getting over $400k a year is a bad thing. Sure, pro golfers might not have it nearly as well as professionals in the "big four" sports, but to say they have it bad (the ones on the PGA tour, that is) is kind of silly.

Even with the salary haircut that the owners want, I think you'd still think they make too much.  NBA, NFL and MLB players generate so much dang money. As unique a skill as it takes to be a professional golfer, the pool of people is much larger than the pool of people who can make it to the NBA (there just aren't as many guys 6'7" and above), so I think those sports' pay reflects all those things.  Add on top of that the fact that their careers are short !
