Flipping means you are trying to scoop the ball to get the ball up. Most players have that tendency to do that as they look at a golf club. Do not misinterpret the fact that the hands have to hinge at impact. They hinge down not up. If you hinge your hands up you flip, if you hinge your hands down towards the ground you will have a more descending blow on the ball and strike the ball first. A simpler way to visualize this is place your hands at hip level as if you are coming in to hit the ball. The back of your left hand (for righties), right hand (for lefties) should be facing away from you. As you approach the ball (this involves some practice) turn the top hand on the club to the ground as you bring the club into the ball. Take a look at Ben Hogan's books it all comes from there. If you turn your top hand down to the ground the club will rotate and go from open to straight and then closed after impact. The amount the club closes after impact depends on how much you turn your left or right (top hand on the club) down. This takes practice and timing but once you can see it and feel it you wll be hitting the ball crisper, more solidly as well as longer and can develop a nice draw.

Everyone is differnt as far as stance , grip, and posture.  I think if you battle with a over the top swing one of the best patterns is Stack and tilt.  Most people I see with it have a realy outside hand path and very vertical club then on the down swing the club was never deep enough so you were already over the top to start the downswing.  Looks like someone chopping wood.  Getting the hands deeper really helps eliminate these sort of issues.  I would post up your swing I'm sure someone here could help you out.

Best advice I could give you is not to listen to all the quick fixes in golf magazine and forums becauses it's all speculation if noone has seen you swing.

Good luck.

Just looking at the video of your swing, try putting the ball a little farther forwards in your stance and angle the shaft of the club so your hands are a bit in front of the head. Your hands want to stay in front of the head through impact. Also, you have what people call a "weak left side". Your left shoulder/arm does not extend, but rather it sucks into your armpit and gets noodly. Lots of the stuff posted above is pretty much what I would tell you to work on, but you should also try and get a better feel for proper lower body weight transfer. I don't have many videos of drills as Youtube isn't working on my computer, but try working on keeping your shoulders squared and position maintained through the swing, proper weight transfer and also grip. Grip is very important to all of this.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Yeah weight transfer is one of the hardest things for me. That video is from like two weeks ago and I think I've improved on some things since then but weight transfer for me is so hard. I can't for the life of me get my weight shifted to the front.

I like this drill, I get to work on my slapshot and clearing my hips/rotating my upper body. It helped me get my head around the concept of rotating my body, although it's a bit bizarre.

I also have been struggling with flipping. It was causing me to hit fat on my irons. Really fat. I believe I have beat it on all of my clubs except my driver. A combination of flipping and hand rotation are resulting in a horrible slice. I can compensate for the hand rotation in my flip and get a fairly straight sky ball about 200 yards down the fairway. While compensating for the rotation if I dont flip i end up with an unplayable hook, and hopefully there were no houses on the left side. If I dont compensate for the rotation and I dont flip, the world is a beautiful place and I'm 300 yards in the fairway. It's a work in progress. The only compensation I am allowing is that I am playing the left side of the fairway. My slices haven't been bad enough lately to come all the way back across into a bad place. I found a couple of training aids on Amazon that I haven't bought into yet, but I am considering. One is the Swingyde, and the other is the Ben Hogan Secret. Both are designed to keep you from flipping and keeping the correct wrist angle through the backswing as well. First thing for me is to commit to more practice.

I've flipped and I still flip at times.  I've found that most of my flipping comes from swinging over the top, which is even harder to fix.  These two things are a battle on every shot.  If it's not one thing or another.  However, the feeling of actually hitting down on the ball, feeling and hearing that click, seeing the ball flight how it should look, was the best feeling I've experienced in golf.  That...ooooh this is how it is supposed to be moment.  It's a circle of love and hate!

I'm nowhere near fixed, but there are the good shots that make it all seem worth it.

Just try to remember the good stuff, because this game can drain you of patience.  At least me...

    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
