Nike Golf.....UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Let me tell you a story......

Weeks ago I heard about the “Recall” on the Nike SUMO 2 drivers. As you would expect, I was a bit "disappointed"....especially since our annual Club Championship was right around the corner and I was going into it WITHOUT a driver!!! I had been “politely” asked by the membership to “refrain” from using my SUMO 2 since there was a question regarding it’s conforming to the USGA.

A reporter from a golf industry newspaper called “The Tour Van” heard of my situation and contacted Nike Golf. On March 20th I got a call from Beth G., Nike’s Public Relations Manager in Oregon. Beth told me that Nike had heard about my “situation” and wanted to do everything they could to help me. She told me she was going to have me a replacement driver by Friday, since the tournament was Mar. 24 & 25. I told Beth that I really appreciated the call and her concern, but given the tournament was literally 4 days away that would be impossible! Beth said to leave to her and she would make it happen.

About an hour later I get a call from Travis T. in Fort Worth, Texas. Turns out that Travis is the guy that makes Tiger’s clubs, Chad Campbell’s clubs, KJ Choi’s, and the rest of the Nike Tour Staff players! I had changed the shaft on my driver to a different make (just my preference) as well as the grip. Travis took all this info down and said “leave it to me”.

On Friday, March 23, a messenger shows up at my office here in California...with my NEW DRIVER!!!...including the SAME shaft and grip I had installed on my original!!!

Now, as if my head isn’t spinning enough, I get contacted by Bob Wood...the PRESIDENT of Nike Golf!!! He wanted to make sure I had received my new driver and that I was happy with it. I told him “I hope you guys treat TIGER this good!!!” Bob was very nice and wanted me to know that the CUSTOMER was Nike’s FIRST concern and that they were glad they got the opportunity to help me. WHATEVER product it may be, I have NEVER been so overwhelmed at the treatment I was given!

I would like to PUBLICLY say this to NIKE GOLF....

Even if your company had NOT been able to pull off this “miracle” of getting me a new club in time for my tournament....which you DID....your sheer effort and concern has won me as a customer for life!!!

That's great news for you!
Is this how NIKE typically acts?
Or do you think it's because the Media was involved?
I have not had such an opportunity to call upon customer service at NIKE.

Word of mouth is some of the best advertisement available, and I am certain the original poster will tell everyone he knows about this. Now, that alone is not going to cause a million more drivers to be sold, but it can't hurt.

It is not that Nike would not have acted on this without the media attention, merely that they probably would not have found out without it.

Bob Wood calling you is very impressive.

Good job by Nike.

I have always had great luck with Nike and thier customer service that is one reason that my bag is stocked with what it is stocked with...not to mention I really like the product.

I have had good experiences with Nike as well. Their local rep here is a really good guy. He is the reason I have my irons. They are also one of the very few golf companies that offer non professional golf course personel a discount on their equipment. Most major manufacturers don't give a crap about you until you become a pro. Nike is a real solid company.

I thought I'd share a messege I also recieved from Bob Wood:

Bill:

I am so glad you got your club in time. When we saw your note it kind of crystallized everything that we were going through and the opportunity we had to make this situation easier for our customers. We really wanted to make this happen for you, and the fact that we did literally made my day. I hope the new stick serves you well, and that you win your flight this weekend. My thanks to Travis and Beth for making this happen.

The best thing that can happen from this is that we cement the relationships we’ve started through our concern and service.

If we earn positive word of mouth from people like you, that is worth a million press releases or ads.

Thanks for being understanding and thanks for being a great Nike Golf customer.

With best regards,

Bob Wood

President

That's awesome. I have no experience with Nike Golf. I've been given a few of their balls by friends, but I've never used them. But stories like this will certainly make me consider them when I get new clubs.

It's great to hear of an awesome customer service experience, and wish I could share the same from Nike, but unfortunateley I cannot....

I sent in two pair of shoes purchased from a retailer last season. They were sent in along with another pair from another consumer... It's been 6 weeks now, and no word... It's two weeks away from the start of the season here, and I have no shoes... I understand that they are busy, and all, but I submitted my receipts to prove purchase date, the right shoes from both pair were toast after 1 season (about 50 rounds per pair)...

So I'm in a quandry.... do I buy new shoes and use the credit value somewhere else... The salesman at the retailer advised that Nike is usually pretty good with these things, and rarely turns down the return..

So I'll take your great customer service experience, and hope they get it done in time..

Thanks!

That's an unbelievable customer service story, and considering I carry all Nike clubs in my bag, I was glad to hear it! Hopefully, they'll be as kind to me if I ever need their customer service.

I tried to like the Nike putter when I was shopping around last season, but liked the Odyssey better. I haven't tried the new Nike putters yet though.

Love mine, well worth the money. Most expensive club in my bag, paid more for it than my drive but well worth it.

Also anyone see the new TW Shoes that are just for the majors...Talk about marketing and going after the Tiger fans and the collectors. I bought the Sp-8 TW's and they are awesome shoes but I don't know about limited edition golf shoes that sounds to much like "The Jordan Era" to me.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
