Wedges - new grooves or old ones?

All the equipment companies have their new wedges with 'micro grooves' etc to compensate for the new groove rule.

There are still plenty of pre 2011 wedges around - are these still going to get the most spin?

I can't see how technology is going create new wedges that can match these. I am thinking of stocking up while they are still on sale. In 5 years pulling out a new 2010 vokey wedge is going to be a benefit I think.

Any thoughts? Anyone given the new wedges a go and prefer them to the old ones?

I bought non-CC Vokeys figuring I'm not a pro and do not play in any tournaments.  If the day comes that I do play in tournaments under CC w/ the new grooves rule, I'll buy new wedges.  Until then, the "old" Vokeys will have to be pried out of my cold, dead hands.

My new wedges (Mizuno MP T-11) have conforming grooves. The DG Spinner shafts seem to compensate very nicely.

Ive got a Mizuno MP T-11 wedge with the new grooves and I dont notice any decrease in spin.

The new groove wedges still work well out on the fairway but you'll lose some spin out of the ruff.

I have some frustration with the old grooves because chipping is tough -- the darn ball just stops if you use a urethane ball. You've almost have got to go to the flag and pick the ball and turn the club over to get some run.

The conforming grooves should help chipping.

Found the same thing. I usually chip with an 8-iron, but use a PW toed-in from fluffy lies to get a little run. Last season, I had success on uphill short shots to one particular crowned green using a pitch and run with an 8-iron. Shot would land 2/3 way to pin and roll the remainder.

The way I understood it, the new conforming grooves were not intended to to reduce spin. They were intended to be less forgiving out of everything other than a fairway shot. They just dont push as much grass or sand through the reduced groove volume.

They were intended to spin less out of everything but a fairway shot.

Yes.  I've been using conforming irons for 3 years, and I prefer them.  I have Titleist AP-2's down to the gap wedge, and that wedge is my most used chipping/pitching club.  I also use the PW and 8I a lot.  I only use my CG-15 56° SW for when I really need the high flight, usually from deeper rough, and it doesn't spin much from those lies anyway.   I play all of my greenside shots to release.  It's how I leaned the game 30 years ago before the advent of tricked up clubs, and it's how prefer to play.

Not always.  Some manufacturers have found that with v-grooves they can make them wider and actually get MORE spin in some lofts.
