There's a video on YouTube of Luke Donald doing a drill to where he puts all his weight forward and does a slow motion swing. Then followed by a full swing. That drill to me stresses how important it is to get your weight forward at impact. The other drill that helped me is the "walk through" drill. As in you swing and continue to follow through with your back leg as if you were immediately going to walk after your ball right after impact. In short get your weight forward at impact. I equate the feeling to trying stick your front foot through the earth when starting your down swing.

i'm plagued by hitting it fat - I know I'm dropping my right shoulder which consequently drops the impact point behind the ball.     Try keeping your shoulders straight & not dipping your right shoulder - it helps me when I execute correctly...

You could be doing any number of things, but the main culprit is having your weight on your back foot. You should try posting a My Swing (everettjrt) thread.

You could do the 3 tee drill...

Place one tee on the outside toe of the club, one parallel to the hosel (how in the **** does the spell check not recognize the word hosel on a golf forum!?), and one in the center of the club. Hit the middle tee without touching either of the other tees. It's as simple as that.

My golf coach in high school coach taught me this drill and it has served me well, whether I'm hitting it fat, thin, off the toe or off the heel. Just hit the middle tee...you don't even need to be at a range to do this drill.

The War Sticks:

The truth is out there, Mulder...Trust no one!!!

PS- crappy weight shift combined with flipping would be my guess since that's the most common reason. Use the search engine. You gots lots to read my dude! Hitting it fat is a common problem.

Some ideas to check out someday:  Deep hands, straightening the rear leg, turning your shoulder downward on both the backswing and downswing (steep shoulders), Hip slide, secondary axis tilt, palmar flexion, the swing arc, point of tangency, the D-plane, the ball flight laws, the power accumulators, the flying wedge, straight arms on the through swing, re-hinging, the importance of side-tilt, advice I hate: release the club, pitch elbow.

PPS- Fat and thin shots are the result of the same problem: the low point of the swing arc is behind the ball. For thin shots, the golfer learns to retract his arms on the downswing so he doesn't hit it fat anymore. Thin and topped shots are the result if the golfer's timing is off.

    • Day 2 (4 Apr 25) - played in the weekly men’s group shootout.  Decent day off the tee and most longer approaches.  Wedges from 70-80 out were off, but green side work was good. Overall a fun day with the crew.
    • $50??? You're not serious, I'm sure. The only thing a $50 driver will be good for is to whip your horse  as you're rounding the far turn heading into the home stretch. Seriously, go to a big box store. They all have used clubs up the wazoo and you should be able to find clubs at a reasonable price. Also, talk to the guys there. You'll be able to tell just by conversing with them which ones are interested in helping you and will provide good advise. Those companies are usually pretty good about weeding out the bad apples who are only interested in making a quick sale. The commission the big box stores pay is so miniscucle anyway that sales guys are usually brand agnostic.
    • Day 13: 4/4/25 Stack Full Speed Spectrum training session.
    • Day 186 - 2025-04-04 Worked before lessons this morning. Not a long time as the first lesson arrived pretty early.
    • Strata are decent clubs for newbies, usually furnished in a complete boxed set, with putter and bag. They're an excellent way to get going in the game and to see if you want to stick with it. If you don't, you're not out too much money but if you want to progress, you should get fit and buy better clubs with newer technology that will help you out. Most places I know of (ie: Golf Galaxy / PGA Store) charge you for the fitting which is then credited back to you when you buy the clubs, so it's essentially free. (I know GG does that...not sure about PGA.) Once you have clubs that fit you rather than you having to maybe contort yourself to fit the clubs (depending on your height/arm length/swing characteristics) you can progress and get better. Ultimately though, as the saying goes, "It's not the arrow, it's the Indian."
