Having watched @mvmac 's masterful stroke I can see why @iacas is making fun of my knees! In my defence, I didn't think there was any way I could keep my swing bottomed out long enough to sweep all four ball with a regular pitch. I'm gonna try again without the knee action. I stand by my 2 for 3 success rate straight out of the gate with no practicing the shot. Like in real golf, it ain't HOW, it's HOW MANY! B-)

Of five? Yeah. It took three to do four because we were toe-shanking them. That's why I gave the tip to put them in a little arc - they were in a straight line, which led to toe shanks.

It's relatively easy to do… Having the knee-work of a loose carnival stripper doesn't help. :)

LOTS of pull hooks on Monday at the simulator, loss of distance (I think I may have been fatting them, hard to say, hearing the ball smack the screen so soon after impact messes with my perception of impact), just general yuck. When I actually hit my start lines I would get great looking shots, but man oh man, was I ever hitting a lot of pulls...

Driver was mostly short pushes, again yuck, but when I really focused on turning ALL THE WAY through on my driver follow through I was getting good lines and distances. I have a tendency to not followthrough completely with a driver and that seems to mess up my ROC and kill clubhead speed. Gotta learn to be more aggressive with the driver...

Gonna try to fit the range into this mornings chores.

Hit the range this morning for a few buckets. Still hitting lots of straight hooks and pull hooks, even when I set the face open at address.

Forgot my camera which is a bit of a pisser. I'm happy that I have a fairly reliable pattern now, a little less than happy that it's a hook.

Can't figure out if I should be trying to work this out with my grip or by setting the face open at address. Had some very good results from opening face a bit before gripping, lots of nice push draws. It's a bit of a head game right now, if all else is equal, leaving the face open at address should give me a very repeatable push draw with occasional pushes that won't draw BUT it seems that it's hard to keep all else equal when I know my clubface is open. My grip starts feeling weird and foreign too. Total mental issue there, lol.

I have definitely evolved. In years past if I were to step up to a ball and just take a natural feeling, unmanipulated swing, you could bet your life it had slice spin on it. Guaranteed. Now if I just walk up and whack a ball with no thought, it will almost always have draw spin on it. That's a HUGE transformation. If I can keep this path/motion and learn to reliably start the ball far enough to the right I am in business.

What say you? Should I attack this via the grip or via the set-up (open face then grip normally)? A combination? Or just keep working on my priority and trust that improving my key#4 piece will eventually cure my key#5 woes?

I'm not going to answer the last question but I do want to say that's very cool to hear that your at a point where you can hit from the inside without even thinking about it. That's where I want to be when I grow up ;)

Get over your mental issue. Set the face slightly right-pointing, and go with it. It should feel good to you because the chances of the ball hooking from there are reduced.

Show some pictures of your grip, but if you're setting the face square or so at address, and returning it roughly there, then your grip is probably fine.

Your path may need to be a bit LESS outward, but I'm reluctant to go there quite yet…

Pretty sure path is ok. Lots of these hooks are slightly pulled too. I also traced the clubhead on some of my recent videos and it's not as outward as George in your new "A6" thread. Generally speaking, if I get it to start to the right I'm ok, but it's a fine line or I push it. I'll keep working on open face set-up until I'm comfortable with it. I think this may be my missing piece.

I run into this at times.  Sometimes the grip feels odd to me and I notice when I set up, the club face closes a bit.  Just go back to basics on the grip and open the face at set up.  We have to get over our fear of the push or slice.  Open the face and swing out.  The ball will come back if we do all the rest correctly.

Yeah, opening the face at address will take some time to trust. So many years as an epic slicer, then as an epic pusher...gonna be tough! Lol.

As far as "swinging out", I really don't consciously use that thought anymore. If I make my backswing correctly and initiate transition with my "exploding shoulder" piece combined with "stepping on the gas" I get a pretty reliable outward path. It only gets sketchy when I start experimenting with Key#5 control. I'm pretty confident that once I can get that face to be consistently pointing to the right at impact this path/motion will be pretty solid.

    • Day 3:  I tried to hit a bucket at the range but an 80 year old man (he told me his age, showed me his knee replacement scars, told me all about his chronic low back pain, etc) couldn’t pass up the opportunity to mansplain to me every little thing I’m doing wrong.  Dude, it’s my third frickin day.  I know I need to twist my hips more, I know I need to keep my head/chest down and not pop up, I know I need to hit through the ball and follow through further, yada yada yada.  I know.  That’s exactly what I’m trying to work on.  How about you tell me or show me how to do those things instead of telling me to watch Iron Byron videos?  Rough day.
    • Day 132: 5/7/24 Full Speed Spectrum Training session 8/24. 7th training program overall.    Another slow session but 4 mph faster than my last session, which was my slowest ever. Going to the doctor on Friday to check on pulled neck muscle.
    • Day 26: Did full swing practice after work. First 15 balls were working on top of the backswing feel, and then tried to incorporate transition feel into the next 15 balls. A's, although this will be my last season of being a fan as they leave for Las Vegas (by way of Sacramento for a few seasons). Hard to see myself rooting for the Giants, but if that's the only MLB in the Bay Area, I guess I might get on board.
    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
