It's golf. Anything's possible.

Hey, the PGA Tour should use that as a promo line.

Back in 2002 I lipped out a birdie putt on the 18th hole at Cobblestone GC in Stuart, FL, & tapped in for a 70. Two months later I couldn't break 90. I lost my swing & developed a bad yip in my putting stroke. I couldn't hit a fairway, couldn't make a putt. About a year later I was playing with a friend & he was keeping score. At the turn I took a look at the card. I had just shot a 52.

So yeah. A 7 could shoot 108. This game can leave you in a hurry.

Yes it is, unfortunately last year I shot a 100 at Tiffany Greens which is a relatively tough course. The course is a Robert Trent Jones II design andΒ pretty tough. I made a 10 on a Par 3 hitting three balls in the water. It wasn't a good day. I've wanted to delete this score from my handicap tracker for a while. Good Luck. Just keep practicing and you'll get it back before you know it.

At least the 100 didn't count against your handicap.

I kind of wonder if I broke off too much to chew on at one time.Β  In reflecting on it, I've completely changed the following things from a couple months ago:

Takeaway

Position at the top

Leg action

Hand action through impact

Shoulder inclination

Shoulder dynamics on downswing

Hell, check out my swing thread to see how vastly different my swing is from earlier this year.Β  Anyway, part of it is mental I'm sure.Β  Another part is that I played on a tougher course that I've only played one other time.Β  Bowling lane fairways and more than one green less than 700 square feet.Β  Anyway, I'm staying positive and committed to the swing changes, trying to give them enough time and just keep grinding out double bogeys until it clicks.

Search and ye shall find.Β  (But I will say: If you really don't know, then your listed handicap is very likely not accurate.)

Never heard of that before. Β I just type my rounds into keepmygolfscore.com and it computes my handicap. Β My round before last would have been two strokes less.

Do you guys keep two scores? Β Or do you just write down your max and forget the other strokes? Β Does everyone use this? (<- ive never seen any of my playing partners do it).

Maybe on a really really really really bad day

though after improving my swing this summer to shooting low 80s consistently I couldn't see me shooting much over 90 on even my worse days...

Re keeping 2 scores, that's totally up to the individual. I like to keep track of my actual score, so if I have a hole where ESC applies, then yeah I just make a note on the scorecard for that hole indicating I need to adjust the final score before entering it for handicapping purposes. (E.g., draw a slash through through the box and put the actual score on the left and the adjusted score on the right.)

Yes, everyone who keeps a handicap is supposed to use ESC. Btw, note that your ESC is based on your course handicap, not your personal handicap index. With the cutoff being at every multiple of 10, and with your index being close to a cutoff, your ESC may vary depending on the course you play. (I.e., it might be 9 at an easy course and 11 at a more difficult one.)

I have only shot over 90 once in 3 years, and that was a few months ago while on university games after a night of drinking and nothing but no-doz keeping my alive. You must be doing some serious changes to your swing.

There was a guy at the course I grew up playing who was stuck at a 6 handicap and wanted to get better. Logically he took some lessons and never got below a 12 again but don't take this as lessons are a bad thing. His instructor felt he needed to overhaul his swing and he just couldn't seem to put it together so he kind of quit on the lessons. He never got his old swing back this is one reason why the only 2 instructors I've ever had basically work with my swing rather than trying to change my swing.

I had a serious over-the-top swing that has taken me two years to fix and I still resort back to it at times. Even theΒ best can fall apart.Β Β To an extent Tiger even though he can still play at a high level at his worst relative to most golfers.

Just from experience, my pro is good but made a mistake in trying to teach me too many thoughts at once. When I sat down with him and told him I need one simple thought and work from it we developed a good practice routine and I solely concentrated on that one move. As I gained confidenceΒ I would move to the next thought and movement and after awhile I gained enough confidence on the course where I started to get much better.Β  In your case, you have already proven to yourself that you can play good golf.Β  Sounds to me like you are in the stage of over thinking way too much and just need to simplify and take a deep breath.Β  It will come back around, but man is it frustrating and time consuming.

The fun continues.Β  Played 9 holes on a goat-track muni that's normally an easy par for me.Β  Shot +5.Β  2 birdies, an eagle, 3 pars, and 3 triples.Β  Nearly made two aces among hooking shots off the course.Β  The first was a 150 yard par-3, hit a knockdown push-draw with an 8-iron to 3 feet past the hole and it spun back to a foot.Β  The other was a par-4 that I drove the green on and lipped out for an easy eagle.Β  The "feel" I have on good swings is my right shoulder working down towards the ball with a lot of pressure in my left foot and somewhat of a block release.Β  Bad swings, it feels like my right shoulder works level and across the line with a little flip causing me to hit a pull-hook off the toe.Β  Even taking practice swings, I can feel good ones and bad ones.Β  I've got the good ones to about 60%, but the bad one's just happen and I don't know why yet.Β  It has something to do with dynamics and momentum transfer somewhere in my swing.Β  I don''t have a key for it yet, but maybe something with the right shoulder working down....

Sounds like your making progress. On the bright side at least you know when you have a bad swing and how to correct it. Thats a hard thing for a lot of people to figure out. Good Luck.

I had a similar issues (Search old threads). Β The swing thought that fixed it for me was rather than concentrating on the shoulder, I thought "Back to target, raise right hip". Β Note: not slide right hip, raise it. Β This was a good swing thought for getting both turned and left shoulder down. Β YMMV. Β The combination of feeling my back to the target and my right hip raising feels right to me. Β I got the thought from the book "Miracle at Merion".

    • WOW, are things that different in the U.S.?Β  I play in the UK, and on my course a player with a handicap of 6.9 would play off of 6, and a player with a handicap of 20 would play off of 19. In a medal comp that means the higher handicapper would get an additional 13 shots, or 13 points if it were stableford. If the difference were only 5 shots the lower handicapper would win 10 times out of 10
