What should ball flight look like, and how is it attained? I'm talking about just in general, not how to keep it low or get it high. If I strike an iron, how should the ball fly? When I do see good players, their golfballs start low and fly upwards to the sky, reach their max, then drop. I want to be able to do that. I'd like to get a video of my swing up very soon.

These are just some pics I have for now. They're from a while ago, and I've since eliminated the overswing (I think) and the hammer thumb (seen in the impact shot) any advice is welcome please. I know this doesn't exactly pertain to my original question, I just didn't want to start a new thread. Thanks

What kind of ball flight do you have now with your irons,  woods, and wedge's now?  Is it super high, low, Mid?

Club selection and shaft selection will play a big part in the ball flight.. I myself went from hitting PING G15 with AWT Stiff shafts that made the ball just launch high into the air to now playing PING i15's with Project X 5.5 shafts that launch considerably lower.

Two things that will help is making sure your ball position is correct.  There is plenty of good info your there on that its pretty basic.  But more importantly look at your impact position.

Your Left wrist should be flat, here it is bent.  This cause as you can see your club face to open, and you don't take a divot after contact with the ball.  If you can start taking divots (not with long irons or above) that will improve shaft angle at impact.  If you were to slap someone it would not be with the wrist angle in the picture above.  Think of it along those lines to get the correct feel for the straight wrist.

The bent wrist also throws off your plane at the top of your backswing as well.  The butt of your club shaft should point at the target line.  Flatting your left wrist should help with that.

Yeah, I've been trying so incredibly hard to get my left wrist flat, and I'm making a lot of progress. This picture is fairly old. My ball flight is pretty high, I'm looking to get a more ascending flight that starts low and finishes high. Thanks for the input, everyone! I'm on a strict college budget, so hopefully someday I'll be able to get the right shaft for my swing.

Irons are pretty high, but usually somewhat consistent distance when hit properly. Still higher and loftier than I'd like. Wedges is ridiculous, My sand wedge max is like 85-90y, and woods is usually not too high when I hit them well, but I can't swing at them very hard in order to do that, so I don't get a ton of distance. Maybe 200-220y.

To be fair, he probably toed it, opening the face. But you're correct about the lack of a divot or even brushing the grass.

Good point.  I just want to share this picture that will help hit the ground and compress the ball.  Can see on the followthrough pic that there is too much weight on the right foot and the hips are back.  I would recommend trying to get the right foot to work closer to what these guys are doing

Sorry about the old pictures in the Original post. These are from Sunday, so they're a better representation of my swing. One thing I noticed from these videos is that I was a little too upright in my stance. Not sure if that'll help me get on plane, or get me coming from the inside more. Is it lag, club head speed, or a combination of both that really gets the ball climbing upward? (Sorry about the sideways video, and thanks for all the advice.)

Carly Booth, straight up dime for sure. That pic of her gives me the shanks every time.

Could you rotate the video? You can do it in the video editing mode on Youtube. Forward leaning shaft and striking the ball at the right spot are the two things that in my view makes a good trajectory. You got the sideways ball flight too of course. Low launch, high spin, starts out low then climbs high because of the backspin, lands softly. If you want to work on your swing for some time and use the forum I suggest you create a "My Swing" thread to keep it in one place. You could perhaps rename this one and report it so it can be moved to the proper section.

Now I'm reading all this info about sliding the hips and rolling the back foot, and I feel like I probably don't do either of those things particularly well. But yes, good forward hand lag and sweet spot are my biggest points of emphasis on the range right now.

The video should be rotated now. It won't look like it, but press play, and it is.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
