I go full OCD

Line 1 - woods used

Line 2 - irons used

Line 3 -S-and or C-hip or P-itch

Line 4 Putts

T for trouble if any shot is not 'normal'

3 putts after a chip is probably lousy chipping AND lousy putting

3 putts after a gir you just don't know

You could jot down 1st putt length if you want to track that.

These days I don't write anything down, just type it into the computer from memory.

Using the putter from off the green I write down PC(putter-chip) in my short game line.

Definitely shouldn't count as a putt.

Score:

On in:

putts:

fairway:

So lets say I just miss the green but hole the putt from the fringe on a par 3. I am now on in 2 with a 1 putt but I scored a two.

Yesterday on hole 1 It technically took me 5 to get on the green put I 1/3 putted. How do you keep track of that for yourself? Does that say more about my putting or my approach?

Its not a putt unless the ball is on the putting green.  For me, that would be zero putts.  In any tournament I've played where putts are counted, it's always been the same.  That way the statistical numbers total up right too.

If you really want to track your true putting progress, add a new data point for putts per green in regulation. Otherwise you may end up with a lot of one putts, and while that looks pretty, it's more of a comment on your scrambling ability if those one putts are for pars instead of for birdies.

I use one line for each of the following category: FWY - Fairway hit or missed GIR - green in regulation, yes or no "C" for chip shot or "S" sand shot, if I get up and down then I put a check next to the C or S. X if not Putts - number of putts to sink, I will put zero if I chip in from off the green as mentioned by others. Score - total strokes I then add info to golf digest - make me better web site for tracking purposes when I get home.

but thats the point im making is that If I was on the fringe only by a foot with a huge down hill putt and I putt it through the green leaving myself about an inch on the fringe. From there I am up hill and 2 putt. I actually used my putter 3 times and none of them were much harder than if I was on the green but I 3 putt. Go back to my stats and put down 1 putt. Later on I go back and look at my score and see that I dont need to work on putting I only had 26 or something like that. I understand keeping stats and comparing to others because everybody is keeping stats those ways but I dont feel like I am accurately judging myself and saying I need to work on putting.

I more or less started this thread with the intention of keeping stats a different way and was wondering what you guys would think. What If I kind of kept track on both. Maybe I write down:

Score: 6

On in: 5

Putt: 3

I should be able to figure out that I putted twice from the fringe.

Or as far as keeping track of myself how important is it if I miss the green by a foot but am still in two putt range. Technically I know I'm not on the green but I know that it is "close enough" and I should be able to two putt.

I do this:

Score

Fairway

Approach Dist

1st Putt Dist

2nd Putt Dist

So if I'm 150 out and i miss the green, then hit a 30 yard pitch onto the green, I put 150/30 in the approach distance box.

In addition to the typical stuff most people track, this system tells me how often i miss a green from each distance, and when I hit it, how close my first put is.

I don't need to put GIR or "on in" because you can get that with putts and score.

I can tell you this.  For Tour stats a putt is only counted if the ball is on the green.  Doesnt matter if the putter is used from the fringe or fairway, it's not a putt.  I have a friend who hates chipping and uses his putter from as much as 10 feet off the green in light rough, and 10 yards off if it's fairway.  They still don't count as putts.  I guess it's up to you, but what you are proposing mostly just confuses the stats.

I'm a big oobgolf.com fan, an addict too. My card is pretty crazy looking.

Line 1.- score for the hole

Line 2 - Clubs used [ each club has a number or letter to make it fit]

Line 3 - Yds to the pin [ except chips ]

Line 4 - FWY hit / GIR

Line 5 - Chips / Putts

Card space permitting penalty strokes

So a Par 4 hole in which I scored a 5 might look like this on each line

Score5

Clubs used  X / 7 / $

Driver, 7 iron, and a chip with a sand wedge

150

Distance to Center of Green [ per my GPS]

Fairways and Greens     F/G

Chips and putts   1/2

All of that info fits neatly into oobgolf.com addict page

approach length is handy to help determine if I am driving well or if the course is playing too long for my game.

If I play the course again, I may decide to move up a set of tees.

With all of this info I can decide what to practice short game, long irons, short irons, wedges hybrids, etc.

A stat I'd like to know or keep is distance of putt made

    • The MTB Prime and Prime X had issues with the cover being too soft and getting cut too easily. They said it was more prevalent in the Prime than the Prime X which I found odd because that was the exact opposite of my experience.
    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
