Hi,

Recently been considering to get myself something to automatically gather my statistics, and I was wondering what type of stats everyone is keeping?

I know some who don't care for any other stat then strokes and yards (driving), but personally I like a much more in depth overview.

What do you all use for keeping track / what stats do you use

another question is what stats you all find useful. in most cases, they will be the same, I know, but some stats (at least for me) are just too time consuming to gather.

So I guess my two questions are:

What stats do you collect?

What stats would you like to have?

Thanks

I keep my score. I am not a very technical player, and I certainly don't like thinking too much on the course.I really don't practice very much, but I play a lot,  so, in my case,I don't rely on stats.

3 Key stats to show you what you need to work on is  Gir, Fir and putts per round.  If you have a sky caddie you can keep track of these in the club sg feature and its not time consuming at all during you round.

Fairway Woods: Titleist 910F-d
Fairway Woods: Titleist 909 F3 or

I keep stats through an iPhone App called Golf Pro.  It's about 12-15$ and it keeps:

club used

distance

chips

putts

distance to hole on the green

penaties

sand shots

Fairways hit R, L, C, or missed

From this input it calcs the up/downs, bounce back, sand saves and then shows all the stats for the round; number of putts, avg distance on par 3,4,5's, etc

It sounds like a lot of input but it doesn't take but the amount of time it takes to walk off the green after you putt.

The stats don't lie and it will humble you!

I just keep track on my scorecard.  Despite being in IT I find I don't like using gadgets when I play golf for some reason.  I track the following right in the appropriate score box and usually just use it to decide what I need to practice in the next week or so.

  • fairways
  • green in regulation
  • sand saves
  • putts
  • penalties

I should probably enter them on a spreadsheet this year or something, might be interesting to get a year over view of how I did.

I've been using the program "Scorecard."

On the course I keep my score, FIR (and which direction I miss if I do), putts, distance of my first putt, and GIR (and if I miss up and down and sand saves).  It only takes 2 lines on my scorecard and after inputting those into the computer it returns with an enormous amount of stats.

I tracked distances when I first got my rangefinder. I used this to aid in tee and approach shot club selection. I tracked FIR, GIr, and putts for a while too. After a while stats weren't necessary. It was obvious I need to keep the ball in play off the tee and get the ball to a decent position on my aproach. Whether tha position was on the the green, in a bunker, or a decent place to chip from, I needed to have at least a chance at a birdie.

Now all I track is score and putts per hole. I still make the odd note related to hole strategy or bag setup.

The stats that, in my opinion, really count (ie. are reliable predictors of eventual score and/or markers of fundamental improvement) are:

1) GIR

2) Putts per GIR

3) Scrambling %

Others I keep just because it's not hard to do so are:

4) Go For Its (Any time you get on or around the green in 2 on a Par 5)

5) Putts Per Round

6) FIR

I've been using www.oobgolf.com to keep track of many stats automatically.  They have a free phone app and it track more than I need but the basic ones I use are, Putts, GIR, Fariways, Ave for Par 3/4/5, handicap.  It tracks many more by just entering your hole by hole score.

I also like the ability to graph all the data and see how things are progressing.

This plus penalty strokes. I was thinking about tracking bunker shots but I don't see how that will help my game.

I use the golfcard app on my andriod.  After each hole I input fairway hit, strokes, putts, first putt distance, penalties, chips, and sand shots.  It takes less than 10 seconds.  You can also measure every shot you take, but I don't usually do that.  it uploads to ushandicap.com and I can see the following:

Putts per round, putts per hole hole, putts per GIR, GIR%, FIR%, left misses, right misses, avg drive distance, avg distance for each club, sand save %, up and downs %, scrambling %, bounce back %, par 3 avg, par 4 avg, par 5 avg, top scores, worst scores, most pars, most bogies, etc.  I can narrow by time or by course.

it puts it all on charts and graphs so you can try to make sense of it all.

Stretch, I've seen you post using Golfshot scorecards.  I use this app too... And it keeps 5 of those 6 very easily in a matter of seconds.

But I like your #4 (Go for it).  I'll have to start keeping that too.  But I'd add the shot distances of #4, and club used to get some successful %'s to make sense of the data.  Would be good to keep for sure and I'm going to start jotting it down for reference.

I enter fairway hit/miss, score and putts.  Skycaddie keeps everything else.  I use GIR, scrambling, and putting stats to plan my practice sessions.

I keep the following stats on my scorecard (using free columns):

total shots (of course)

fairway hit:

- "x" when hit and at least 80% of my regular distance

- L/R for miss left/right, o if completely OOB

number of penalty shots

shortgame shots (if inside 50yds):

- "c" for chip

- "p" for pitch shot

- "b" for bunker shot

putting:

- number of putts

- initial putting length

- if missed, where and how

-  length "S"hort or "Long", 0 if perfect length

-  side L/R and if it's above or below the hole

sounds much, but is quite easy to handle, once you get used to it.

a typical hole stat could look like this (excluding the putting stats, which I don't do every time):

"4 x c 1"

which means, I hit the fw, missed my approach and made the up&down; with a chip and a putt.

a perfect hole would look like:

"3 x 1"

fairway hit, one putt for birdie

and my disaster holes sometimes look like this (thankfully not very often):

"9 oL 2 bbc 1"

first drive ob, next one missed the fw left, also a 2nd penalty shot because one of the transport/approach shots went into water, approach shot found a bunker, didn't get out of the bunker with the first try, didn't find the green with the second try, chipped and 1-putted for a spectacular 9 on a par5.

Using this method, I found out, that 55% of my shots took place inside 50yds, including putting.

More than enough I 2- or even 3-putted after an initial shortgame shot (chip/pitch/bunker).

so my focus on my training sessions went to the shortgame and putting (without ignoring the long game), let's see, what the upoming season will bring.

    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
