I have been debating replacing the grip on my 2 year old Cleveland Classic #1. The first year I used the stock red win grip (which was firm and cheap). I replaced it in year 2 with a winn grip medium sized black pistol. This grip is very shock absorbant without completly numbing.

However I am starting to think I did not need to use a medium sized grip. I have small hands I am 5' 6", and wear a cadet large glove. My putter is a 34" but I usually grip the club towards the bottom of the grip. this pretty much renders a medium grip void.

I have found my search for the perfect grip/putter fit to be endless. There is nothing worse than getting a club regripped only to realize in your 1st round it is not a good fit.

So my questions are do I stay with the medium grip if it is working, though I am convinced there is some better fit out there.

Can anyone recommend a standard sized grip, that has a good feel, but is somewhat shock absorbant?

I was looking at Golf Pride Tour Tradition, Golf Pride Player wrap or a lamkin L 3GEN Pistol Smooth Standard?

Any feed back would be appreciated!

Try a round grip. Itomic makes a good round one: http://edelgolf.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage;=flypage.tpl&product;_id=6&category;_id=1&option;=com_virtuemart&Itemid;=6 .

Interesting suggestion on the round grip. I know Edel supports this to a degree and he is the most respected putter fitter/maker out there perhaps. I tried a round grip after reading something about it online. Didn't work for me, but I am sure others would like it.

I find putter grip to be the most personal of all golf questions. Must have been through 20 of them in recent years. I finally found what I like in the form of Pingman and Iomic (regular or opus) midsize grips. The Iomic absolute is shaped differently than the other two and it didn't appeal to me. You could consider trying one of these two. They helped me feel the ball better and improved my distance control. The large and soft grips, while feeling good in my hands, prevented me from getting the feedback I needed for precise distance control.

The way you hold the putter will effect much as well. For example, I am 6'6" 300 lbs and use some of the smallest putter grips out there. I use a two pistoleros grip (from Geoff Mangum). If I held the putter differently, such a small grip would be more problematic.

Also, you mention choking down on the putter. You might consider getting that putter cut down and holding the proper area of the grip. I am 6'6" and use 34.25" putters. I think the vast majority of folks use a putter that is too long. More info below on that. This is one of the many excellent articles from Geoff Mangum's "Tips" section on his site.

I have to agree on the round grip. I found a good normal grip for irons, that was round and had great feel to it. I just make sure i bought one that was oversized. I find its helped me out a ton.

I'm liking the round grip idea more and more too.  I have a Cleveland Classic #4 that I putt around the living room with.  I took the original red grip off and built up the shaft with tape to take the taper out of a regular iron grip.  I have a bunch of extra Black Widow Edge grips so I blew one of those on.  I'm REALLY liking this!  Forces me to aim the head/face without any influence of the flat part of the grip in my hands.

ERIK - What is the diameter of the Edel round grip?

The bold part is why the round grip is great. If the flat part is off two degrees from the face of the putter, well, then your body or mind will be getting mixed signals.

I don't know the diameter. I know it's not tapered - it's a consistent thickness the whole way down. So roughly the normal butt diameter of a grip (maybe a little thinner) all the way down would be my guess? I can measure the next time I'm downtown at the building, or at least take pictures of it next to some normal grips or something.

Edel Grips - The price is reasonable. But, wait until you see the shipping rates when ordering more then one.

UPDATE: When I finally got somebody on the phone they took care of that.  Call the order in when ordering more then one.

Thanks for all the advice. the issue I have had with "obscure" grips, is that the local golf shop will not/can not order them due to shipping cost. Originally I wanted to install a Golf Pride Tour Tradition grip (smooth, paddle/pistol. Similar to a scotty cameron without the etchings or price).

I was told by Golf Galaxy, Dicks and Northway 8 (local shop) that they could not order 1, they would have to order enough to make it a profit. So my option was to order online and pay $9 and $5 shipping and then they could charge me the $2 or $ 3 dollar to install or install myself.

I may just go find a lamkin smooth one and have that put on.....

Actually at $9 a grip and $6 postage Edel is quite reasonable for a grip that's custom made for a small market.

I received an e-mail from them stating that they are going to fix the online store checkout. (They were multiplying the number of grips ordered by $6.)

I just regripped my Scotty Cameron Del Mar 3 Pro platinum with a golf pride tour tradition... They also make a slightly larger tour classic I believe its called... I've just been rolling putts with it all week on my callaway putting mat (good mat, giant ripoff in price) and I've been really happy with the feel... I was looking for a smaller pistol grip with a flat front like the original scotty grip.. This grip is much softer than the original.

I'm surprised that this grip is a specialty order, golf pride is pretty standard as the top or a top grip manufacturer. This is their basic pistol putter grip...

Also thinking about getting a couple inches cut off my putter. I like you choke down a bit so I can get my head on top of the ball. I grip it mid grip, if im wearing a loose sweater sometimes the butt end with catch.

Good luck finding a grip.

That's weird, I have a couple of those grips, and Dick's is where I bought them.  Must be a regional thing.

I use a Maltby standard size wrap from Golf Galaxy for $4. Good feel and shock absorbent. IMG_0615.jpg

Thanks for all the help. I have settled on with EBL 3GEN Pistol Smooth or a Pingblack out.

As much as I have a trouble conflicting company logos together, I tried the ping black out and it just felt right. I am waiting to compare the Lamkin to the Ping.

I have settled on either lamkin EBL 3GEN Pistol Smooth Standard or the Ping Blackout.

I have to compare shock absorbtion and feel of the Lamkin and get over putting a ping logo on the cleveland!

However the Ping Blackout felt really good.

That Ping blackout is not going to absorb much shock.

Anything is softer then Ping. Winn Lites are soft. I use them on my clubs for shock absorption but not my putters. The nicest feeling firm grips with cushioning are those Australian  Leather Ones. About $35.

I think Golf Smith carries them in the catalog.

Exactly. That "shock" is vibrations. Vibrations is feedback. Feedback is feel. Feel is distance control.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
